I mean he fought hard for these Comey memos in order to somehow discredit the former FBI Director during his book tour. He got them. He leaked them within 1 hour to the media. And frankly it corroborated nearly everything Comey testified to and has been saying publicly. The memos make him more credible and looks like he has been very truthful and buttoned up. In addition, the memos make Trump look like and even bigger fool (if you can imagine that.)
I'd bet there are some WH staffers all the way to DUMP that are NOT happy today. LOL.

(26,060 posts)He thought Rosenstein would refuse to release them and then the cons would explode with one moronic conspiracy theory after another about what was in the memos, what were they hiding. Instead, Rosenstein shrugged his shoulders and said "knock yourselves out".

(26,060 posts)And so desperate to muddy up the Russia investigation because he's dirty in it up to his eyeballs that he's willing to try anything to distract and deflect. REmember when his memo was supposed to lead to the arrest of Mueller, Obama, Hillary and a whole host of others? That's what hannity promised his audience.

(32,722 posts)And what happened to Nunes' recusal from over a year ago? He's not supposed to have anything to do with this Trussia investigation, and yet he's all over it like super glue.
The fact that Comey's memos do nothing to help Trump is completely lost on Nunes.

(32,722 posts)... but he could probably get Nunes taken off the House investigation committee, if he really wanted to.
It would be hard to find someone equally stupid and pliable to replace him though. Paul Ryan as Speaker of the House is in charge of committee appointments. So Cheeto could tell Ryan to take Nunes off the committee.

Today: "The Comey Memos: They fully corroborate Comeys account of all his interactions with Trump. Nothing they say or fail to say helps Trumps defense, despite his loyalists desperate efforts to spin them his way."
Thursday:
"I agree the memos hurt only Trump; his allies on the Hill were crazy to demand them. Still, Rosenstein had a duty to stand his ground. The memos were evidence in an ongoing FBI investigation. Releasing them set a dangerous precedent."
and
"Now that Rosenstein has caved to that threat & has given Congress the Comey memos, setting a terrible precedent, I worry about Rosensteins integrity just as I did when he helped Trump concoct a phony excuse for firing Comey."

(4,742 posts)If much was redacted and most of what was in the memos were "out there" already then it is nothing really. Maybe Rosenstein and Mueller even collaborated to release these as a way to back up Comey's claims, keep Rosenstein as boss for now, maybe embarrass Nunes and Trump, and show that the Republican Congress leaks info.
KY_EnviroGuy
(14,494 posts)However, Prof. Tribe's point is well taken, that this could make Congress think they can have access to anything they want from any investigation - which creates a dangerous precedent and essentially politicizes active legal case evidence.
In that abstract sense only, this is a win for Trump and the Repugs. We'll have to wait an see if they demand more items.

(22,651 posts)Comey spoke live & said he made detailed notes a year ago, he also mentioned the people he told, including Sessons.
Nothings changed over the past year. Comey has always been credible & truthful.
Imagine the difference if Comey was actually corrupt & went along with the Republican presidents crap.

(14,249 posts)PLEASE don't make us give you these memos, these memos that corroborate everything Comey said, contain additional damaging information about what was going on at the White House and makes Trump look even worse!
We're not gonna give 'em to you no matter WHAT!
Oh, well, ok. If you insist. But whatever you do, PLEASE don't let the PRESS get ahold of them!

That can't be what the Madman wants to be dominating the news cycle right now.
It also contained some other little tidbits not helpful to Trump, like the part about him being angry that Flynn didn't tell him earlier than Putin had called.
Whatever you want to think about James Comey, the memos pretty much back up everything he testified to and wrote in his book. I was a little surprised at reading them about how much stuff in them I already knew.
Now, if you're Trump, go ahead and call Comey a liar and claim he's making stuff up about him.
But that means that Comey would have had to be contemporaneously trying to frame Trump all the way back to early January 2017, at a point where he has no reason to believe his job as FBI director was in jeopardy, and at a time where the primary focus was a counterintelligence investigation directed at Flynn.

(37,428 posts)He can't be all that sanguine about being tied to Trump, and must have known that there could or would be trouble in the memos. This gives him cover, if he dares to begin distancing himself.
