When that POS mocked a person with a disability, and the physical characteristics of everybody he was running against, I stopped caring about his tender sensibilities regarding his horribly flawed and disgusting persona. In my opinion, bring on the humiliation and let that scum of the earth taste a bit of his own medicine.

(37,748 posts)Why reduce your premise to merely two options when many others yet exist?
Unless of course, yours is simply a self-indulgence to more efficiently advertise how righteous you are at the expense of others... which of course, would necessitate the preclusion of additional possibilities.
onenote
(42,714 posts)But since you raised the issue, to what extent are folks willing to go in the name of "the ends justifies the means"?
Is it okay to mock Trump's appearance? I really don't have a problem with that. Just as I didn't have a problem with cartoonish depictions of other president's appearance.
Is it okay to photoshop a picture of Trump and use that photo as the basis for mocking his appearance? I think not, even if it is something the other side might do.
Is it okay for us to try to suppress republican votes through various forms of deception, intimidation, misinformation since that's what the other side does? Again, I fall on the side of no, it's not. Not because we shouldn't be "like them" but because wrong is wrong no matter who does it.
So my question back to you and to the poster I responded to: is there a point where the ends don't justify the means?
paleotn
(17,930 posts)If you've not yet figured out the world really doesn't work that way, I'm not sure what else to say. Sorry, but the narrative of "we won't stoop to their level" is a complete and total failure when it comes to moving public opinion. And public opinion wins elections. You don't have to like it, but it is what it is.
onenote
(42,714 posts)Or does the ends justify the means no matter what the means? For example, would you support efforts to engage in voter suppression (through misinformation, deception, intimidation) against voters in republican areas?

(42,714 posts)I'm fine with mocking Trump's appearance and eating habits just I was fine with cartoonish mocking of previous president's appearance and eating habits.
I'm not fine with photoshopping a picture to provide the basis for the mockery, even if the other side also did that. And to the extent that this discussion was prompted by the photo circulating of Trump with Abe on the golf course, it's been demonstrated that the photo was altered.
You've got my line on the issue.

Telling the truth about him makes him crazy, he really thinks he is "King of the World" He mocks other leaders about their appearance, putting the US in jeopardy with the unstable tyrants overseas. He himself is an unstable tyrant. If the ass kissers around him refuse to admit this, then it is up to the rest of us to point out the obvious. Democracy in American, and damn near everywhere else, has never been the scholarly debate many would like it to be. It's a scrap. A street fight. A bare knuckle brawl. It's always been that way and it's irredeemable. I'm not sure where some folks learned their politics, but I learned mine from a democratic machine. Figuratively kicking Rethugs in the face was simple a matter of course. One may work with them to get things done, but come election time, the knives came out.

(260 posts)It's that he lies about it. His doctor, who maybe was promised the VA administrator job, lied about it. His last physical had him grow an inch to 6'3", an inch more than previously reported (who grows after 70?), and kept his weight down to 239. Which by an amazing serendipitous coincidence makes his BMI 29.9. Just inside the obese limit of 30. As a mature, sedentary engineer who is on the other side of the line, at a BMI of ~31, and close to the weight he says he is, although 3 inches shorter, I know I'm slimmer than him.
In the words of today's best young activists, I call BS.

(63,221 posts)I try to see everyone as a human being regardless of what they look like. However Trump is entirely different. He is ugly from the inside out. He never misses a chance to criticize people for what they look like, especially women and he is excessively vain and conceited. He is hideous in every way. His physicality is a manifestation of his internal ugliness. Reminding him of the fact that he is an ugly, fat old man robs him of some of the power that he thinks he has.

(82,383 posts)If a nice person were not particularly well favored, we don't mention it.
But even a surface attractive person can look ugly when saying things like the Orange Disaster says.
Jane Austen had a character who say "an agreeable manner" can make "personal defects" irrelevant. Likewise, even a gorgeous exterior can seem ugly by a horrible manner, which the Orange Toxin certainly has.
If he were a nice guy, he would probably be considered sort of neutral - if he were not vain, he wouldn't have the hairdo to make fun of. We'd give him a pass on his weight.

Oh, and that he is fat or that he has terrible grooming habits or that he looks like a fool with the orange stuff, is not what matters in that I dont like to shame people for their looks, what MATTERS is he represents us to the world and his FACE now represents hate, intolerance and violence.
He could be skinny, not have a tiny member, and I would hate him just as much. He could have nice looking hair and features, I would still hate him.

The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,732 posts)Nobody would make fun of a guy just for being older, overweight and balding, considering how common those characteristics are. But Spanky is so vain that he tries to disguise his weight with suits that don't fit (when good tailoring, which he certainly could afford, would do a far better job of it); he's gone gray like just about everyone else his age but he dyes his hair an unnatural yellow that varies between brass and urine; he tries unsuccessfully to cover his bald spot with a bizarre double combover that makes his head look like it has corners; he paints or fake-tans his face orange, leaving bluish-white circles around his eyes; and he ties his neckties so that the wide end hangs down over his crotch, leaving the narrow end loose unless he secures it with tape. He's a mess, but he's done it to himself. I feel no guilt at all for mocking the disastrous efforts of a ridiculously vain man to look young, fit and handsome. Mutton dressed as lamb.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)conceit that compels us. He looks in the mirror and sees a young, virile, handsome, desirable stud. And he denigrates the appearance of others as if he was in a position to do so, but he's not. He's a vain, aging, bloated, balding, ugly old man and he refuses to see it. We see it as our duty to always remind him of what he really is.
Besides, his kind of ugly is not just skin deep. It radiates from his mangled, black soul. He's ugly because of who he is on the inside and that is entirely his fault.
