Dropping the suits could help Cohen avoid being questioned by lawyers from Fusion GPS or having to turn over evidence related to the case both steps that could undercut his defense in the criminal probe.

There was likely more than enough evidence to Blow-up his lawsuit gathered up the feds. His only hope was either scaring or warring them down by dragging it out in court to settle or win because on some minor details they are unable to prove. The seizure of all that information by the feds made that very unlikely.

It could have become embarrassing if Cohen was forced to using Trump campaign money to fund his case, which I suspect will prove to be illegal.
