If youve been anywhere near the Internet over the last 48 hours, youve probably seen the video of two African American men being arrested by the Philadelphia Police Department inside a Starbucks on Thursday afternoon. Starbucks has apologized. The men were not charged with anything and have been released. And the PPD has said the cops did nothing wrong. Here, Rittenhouse Square resident Melissa DePino the one who shared the video gives her account of what happened inside the Starbucks.

So this has been an interesting couple of days.
Its freaking insane. Like, literally insane. Its crazy viral. Every single media outlet in the world is calling me. But Ive only talked to the Root and somebody from Good Morning America. Its so overwhelming.
When did you first notice the two men who wound up being arrested at the Starbucks?
I was just sitting there working on my laptop, and I guess I first noticed them when the two first cops the bike cops walked in. The girl behind the counter had called 911, apparently, and the cops came and said the guys were trespassing. They said we were waiting for somebody, and then the white guy in the video thats their family friend they were waiting for he shows up. The guys wanted to know what they did. And then more cops and more cops and more cops show up.
And then how did it escalate from there?
A bunch of people in the store were standing up and talking to the girl behind the counter and the cops, asking why this was happening. And then they freaking put them in handcuffs and perp-walked them out the freaking store. These guys never raised their voices. They never did anything remotely aggressive.
You would have heard or seen it.
I was sitting close to where they were. Very close. They were not doing anything. They werent.
Whats been the reaction to the video that you shared?
I cant even get over it. Its got 4.15 million views, 101,000 retweets. Its freaking insane. Honestly, I didnt think this would get picked up.
Why not?
People ignore this kind of stuff. They dont believe that it happens. People are saying that there must be more to this story. There is not. This would never happen to someone who looks like me. People dont believe black people when they say this stuff happens. It does. They want to know the extenuating circumstances. There are none.
What do you hope happens next?
Im no expert. I just happened to be there and I happened to share this video. I knew it wasnt right. I hope it starts a conversation. And hopefully people will start to believe that this really does happen.
Will you be going back to that Starbucks?
No. I cant. And its right around the corner from my house.

By Saturday, Old Navy had released a statement on its Facebook page, apologizing to Conley and announcing that three employees had been terminated as a result of the incident, the DesMoines Register reports.
The situation was a violation of our policies and values, and we apologize to both Mr. Conley and to those weve disappointed. All of our customers deserve to be treated with respect, the statement read in part. Following a thorough investigation of the incident, three employees who were involved have been terminated. (34,086 posts)The video shows the arrest - not what led up to the arrest.
FWIW, I absolutely believe it was racism and that the same would not have happened to white customers waiting for a friend.
But "It's on video," won't provide a satisfactory answer to anyone not already inclined to view it as racism.

I've met people in town here to discuss things and not buy anything. Never a problem.
I'm sure Starbucks will get involved and clear this up - it's not good PR for them.
But the most important thing about this is that it would never have happened to a couple of white men.

(51,626 posts)I went in 1998 and bought a plain, black coffee and I put ice in it and then sugar and milk. The girl behind the counter told me I owed her 50 cents for the milk since I had just made myself a cappuccino by pouring the milk on the bar into my coffee. In a state of shock I paid it and wrote a nasty, detailed letter to the company. In return I got coupons for their store which I promptly gave away and never, ever went back. I worked at an Italian coffee shop in Phila and if I had ever done that to a customer I would've been nailed by my boss. Fuck them!

(616 posts)Let America Be America Again by Langston Hughes
Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Seeking a home where he himself is free.
(America never was America to me.)
Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed--
Let it be that great strong land of love
Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
That any man be crushed by one above.
(It never was America to me.)
O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
But opportunity is real, and life is free,
Equality is in the air we breathe.
(There's never been equality for me,
Nor freedom in this "homeland of the free."
Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark?
And who are you that draws your veil across the stars?
I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart,
I am the Negro bearing slavery's scars.
I am the red man driven from the land,
I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek--
And finding only the same old stupid plan
Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak.
I am the young man, full of strength and hope,
Tangled in that ancient endless chain
Of profit, power, gain, of grab the land!
Of grab the gold! Of grab the ways of satisfying need!
Of work the men! Of take the pay!
Of owning everything for one's own greed!
I am the farmer, bondsman to the soil.
I am the worker sold to the machine.
I am the Negro, servant to you all.
I am the people, humble, hungry, mean--
Hungry yet today despite the dream.
Beaten yet today--O, Pioneers!
I am the man who never got ahead,
The poorest worker bartered through the years.
Yet I'm the one who dreamt our basic dream
In the Old World while still a serf of kings,
Who dreamt a dream so strong, so brave, so true,
That even yet its mighty daring sings
In every brick and stone, in every furrow turned
That's made America the land it has become.
O, I'm the man who sailed those early seas
In search of what I meant to be my home--
For I'm the one who left dark Ireland's shore,
And Poland's plain, and England's grassy lea,
And torn from Black Africa's strand I came
To build a "homeland of the free."
The free?
Who said the free? Not me?
Surely not me? The millions on relief today?
The millions shot down when we strike?
The millions who have nothing for our pay?
For all the dreams we've dreamed
And all the songs we've sung
And all the hopes we've held
And all the flags we've hung,
The millions who have nothing for our pay--
Except the dream that's almost dead today.
O, let America be America again--
The land that never has been yet--
And yet must be--the land where every man is free.
The land that's mine--the poor man's, Indian's, Negro's, ME--
Who made America,
Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain,
Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain,
Must bring back our mighty dream again.
Sure, call me any ugly name you choose--
The steel of freedom does not stain.
From those who live like leeches on the people's lives,
We must take back our land again,
America!
O, yes,
I say it plain,
America never was America to me,
And yet I swear this oath--
America will be!
Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death,
The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies,
We, the people, must redeem
The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers.
The mountains and the endless plain--
All, all the stretch of these great green states--
And make America again!

(9,838 posts)stand up and get involved, nothing much will happen. IMHO, if a few people who were inside this cafe started speaking up and coming to the aid of the men who were apprehended, things might have turned out differently. I am sure that many people (self included) are afraid of law enforcement or unhinged bystander escalation.

(129,376 posts)Because this has happened before in 2015 (with a cop) at a different store downtown here in Philly and Corporate insisted it wouldn't happen again.
In reply to Leighthardt's post on Starbucks' official Facebook page, Starbucks wrote in part, "We are aware of this situation, and it is certainly not in line with the experience we want any of our customers to have in our stores. We are taking all necessary steps to ensure this doesn't happen in the future."
A spokesperson for Starbucks did not specify what those steps are when asked by NBC10, but wrote, "We want everyone who visits our stores to enjoy their visit. This customer's experience was not consistent with the welcoming and friendly environment we strive to create for everyone."We have personally apologized to the customer and look forward to welcoming him back to our store."
NBC10's Rosemary Connors visited the Starbucks Monday and was allowed to use the bathroom without having to pay for anything.

(129,376 posts)Especially since the menu was pretty minimal. They were "coffee bars" or "coffee lounges" and were configured with equipment to handle internet surfers in order to compete with the local indie coffee shops and internet cafes. Thus their larger stores have sofas, soft chairs, and other furniture to mimic a huge livingroom or rec room.
This is what THIS particular Starbucks looked like inside. On the wall at the opposite of the doors was apparently a long sofa.

(1,151 posts)I have used the washroom and met people and used the wifi at many Starbucks all over the city and have never encountered so much as a question much less faced arrest.
And even if that is the policy, you ask someone to make a purchase, you don't call the police.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)In big cities, if everyone can freely come in and use the restroom without buying something, a restaurant will turn into a circus pretty fast. I seldom wait for people in restaurants, mostly I do in hotel lobbies, but when I have waited in restaurants, I buy something and explain to the people at the counter that I am waiting for someone and I expect then in X time.
The manager does not have to be a Trump supporter. She could have gotten roasted by district management about being too liberal with allowing restroom use or people sitting in the store without buying something. Would be interesting in knowing her story. Yes, she made the wrong choice, but it could have been because she felt that she needed to follow policy.
BumRushDaShow
(129,376 posts)They did that to a cop and got smacked.
These are not sit-down / reservation-style "restaurants". There are no waiters/waitresses that bring a menu to you and then come back and bring food to a table. They are supposedly "social hubs" in terms of their public and word-of-mouth advertising.
Oddly enough, McDonalds started offering free wifi in some of their restaurants to encourage the same thing almost 10 years ago before Starbucks went "free" -
In an effort to become more of a "destination" than a grab-n-go eatery, that most iconic of fast food chains McDonald's is now serving up free wi-fi. Starting mid-January, the restaurant will nix the $2.95 fee that it had previously charged for two hours of Internet access (which was available at 11,000 of its 14,000 domestic locales).
<...>
So why the switch to free Wi-Fi? Well, McDonalds is hoping to become a hang-out spot of the coffee shop variety it also plans to start selling frappes and smoothies mid-2010. And given the fact that coffee chains like Starbucks charge customers to surf while they sip, the idea doesn't seem all that pie-in-the-sky.
Of course, the question becomes this: Doesn't the concept of people lingering at McDonald's to troll Facebook negate the very concept of a "fast food" restaurant, a concept that aims to get as many people fed and out the door as possible?
What do you think? Would you plug in at McDonalds? Or are you sticking to your local coffee shop?

(7,422 posts)If I'm using someone's facility like that, I consider it simply conscientious to buy something in exchange, even something small. Your friend is being wise.
If I'm traveling and have to use a restroom then I make a purchase, even if it's just a bottle of water. I don't assume they're running a charity.

(1,151 posts)used the bathroom and even waited for people there without ordering. I have NEVER been so much as questioned about it. Not even a second glance. No surprise, I'm white.
And if they want to enforce the policy (which they should do uniformly), all they have to do is ask someone to place an order before sitting down. They don't have to call the police. How is that kind of escalation even REMOTELY justified?
In your "humble opinion," what else would you call it when cops handcuff two individuals and march them into their squad car? How does describing the situation accurately "incite and inflame"?

The black men obviously didn't commit any crime, and from a purely legal standpoint I suppose the cops didn't either - but I'd still like to see them lose their jobs over it. Pigs will be pigs.
