Michael Cohen has never faced attorneys like the ones investigating him.
The federal prosecutors looking into Cohen, the longtime lawyer and fixer for Donald Trump, have deep and varied experience with financial crimes such as bank fraud, money laundering, and racketeering. On Friday, they submitted a court filing that gave the first glimpse into the investigation that exploded into the public eye with an FBI raid on Cohens office and home on Monday.
Because of attorney-client privilege issues, it is exceedingly rare for attorneys offices to be raided as Cohens were. There are multiple safeguards against prosecutorial abuse in this regard, such that any attorney to whom this happens is usually found (or pleads) guilty of conspiracy to commit a crime.
And most attorneys arent stupid enough to tape all their conversations with their clients.
Cohen has long been counted as one of Trumps most ardent loyalists. But Cohen of all people would know that Trump doesnt return loyalty. Beyond that, Trump cant protect him. Much as Trump may have been trying to signal his intent to protect his associates using the Scooter Libby pardon, Cohen is being investigated for both federal and state crimesand presidential pardon power doesnt extend to state crimes.
And Cohen is potentially looking at doing a lot of time in the big house, assuming that judges allow the various recordings and pieces of evidence taken in the raids to be used against him. Its unlikely that a future Republican president will intercede on his behalf. Hell be left hanging in the wind.

(58,724 posts)I wish Cohen would flip so that all the ugly truth can come out about Trump.
We need every advantage we can to swing the R's in Congress to impeach.

(52,332 posts)Stupid move on his part, obviously, but he's the sort of person who thinks he's doing the upright and proper thing by being loyal to Donnie to the bitter end.
Making a deal means not just admitting failure but doing something he thinks is dishonorable.
Can't see him doing it.
That said, not sure it's needed. Sounds like they have hard evidence, hopefully more than what they need.

(14,249 posts)He's a wimp. He talked big when he had Trump backing him up and he was dealing with people who didn't know any better. But he's in the big leagues now and has never encountered anything like this. He's probably not talking much smack now - at least not to Mueller.

(613 posts)The Nixon pardon was a travesty.
Obama's decision not to prosecute the torturers, and not to expose the Iraq war lies, was a travesty.
None of this "moving on" stuff. As a country we need to face our past and let the rule of law rule. Criminals should be prosecuted and go to prison.
