My parents were good people. Old time Republicans. They would be horrified to see what is happening now. Dad had a photo of Dubya on his desk for a while, but he got pretty disgusted and the picture disappeared quickly.

You are right, "this is not normal." Of course, things haven't been normal since the run up to 2016 elections. It really wasn't normal on the Democratic side either, although nothing like the GOPers.

(10,216 posts)It allows corporations to bring suit against nations before tribunals of lawyers who work for those same corporations. It does NOT give this right to citizens, unions or environmental groups. It allows for NO appeal process. It allows corporations to sue over expected lost earnings, not actual lost profits just anticipated lost profits. If that minimum wage hike will cause a loss of profits for Nissan and Volkswagon factories in TN, then we get to pay a huge fine or change the law.
This is a loss of sovereignty and democracy on a scale never before implemented. I think it is one of the reasons some Dems split away from Hillary. It was the only thing I was glad about when Trump won.....(that of course was before we knew about all his crimes against our country)
If he signs up for TPP, he will lose another part of his so called base.

(31,261 posts)Trump is an idiot. Fortunately this country still have enough standing that TPP countries will still let us in. I was under the belief that TPP was actually good for farmers.
One thing that I think that a lot of Americans don't get, even politicians is that it is automation that is killing off millions of jobs, not trade deals. There was a CBS 60 Minutes piece a couple of years back where an venture capitalist pointed out the way to bring manufacturing back to America was to use smart machines, but he pointed out not a lot of jobs will come with that return.
Some here make the observation that historically automation has expanded the labor pool, even as it took some jobs. The issue that I have with that premise is that at no time in history but now have machines competed with the craft AND brain labor that humans provide, we are in unchartered waters.
Farmer-Rick
(10,216 posts)Sorry about the confusion. That's where I live.
But referring to the TPP, it is not good for America and it certainly isn't good for small organic farmers like me.
Yeah, if your an industrial grain farmer with 100s of thousands of acres who sells bushels of GMO, Round Up laced and pesticide drenched grains for pennies you need other countries to buy it all up from you. You need poorer countries who can't produce on your scale to eat up the chemical laced "farming" you do. But allowing other corporate farmers to come in and compete with smaller farmers here is a sure bet for the continued collapse of the American Small farming community.
It allows corporations to bring suit against nations before tribunals of lawyers who work for those same corporations, with NO conflict of interest regulations. It does NOT give this right to citizens, unions or environmental groups. It allows for NO appeal process. It allows corporations to sue over expected lost earnings, not actual lost profits just anticipated lost profits. If that minimum wage hike will cause a loss of profits for Nissan and Volkswagen factories in TN, then we get to pay a huge fine or change the law.
This is a loss of sovereignty and democracy on a scale never before seen in the US. It's neoliberal economics race to the bottom. I think it is one of the reasons some Dems split away from Hillary and Obama.
If he signs up for TPP, he will lose another part of his so called base. The people around here aren't as dumb as he thinks. They see how NAFTA and Obama's free trade deals were deals only for big corporation and not for them. They equate those free trade giveaways with Clinton and Obama and think the Dems are the ones promoting it. So, Trump will piss off those Trump voters if he sings the TPP.
