For my 3000th post, I'd just like to say that ...

I am likely to continue as I have begun, never knowing exactly what's going on, but very grateful for the energy and industry of others, who have saved me incredible amounts of time scouring the internet for interesting stuff. This means I'm pretty much of a freeloader, but at least a freeloader with good manners. I rec and kick and support N2DOC in whatever way I can. I observe far more than I post, but I feel I'm not a true lurker, as I am observing even when not posting. For instance there is a certain amount of paranoia active on DU just now. And no wonder: I have been seeing suspect posts from 2004 to date here and everywhere else on the net. We have a right to paranoia. But that's too serious for this post, in which I intend to just wander around a little, meander from place to place, and of course,

ask again how one inserts smilies into posts? Every time I try to insert one into a new post form, the code for the smilie appears, but the smilie never does. If I double click, I get two copies of the code. What am I doing wrong?

So the question above was the most important part of this post. I would mainly like to thank all the old timers, whose names I know, including the ones who are no longer here. And to thank them for bringing notes and links on all sorts of topics to DU, where I can find them easily, and remain one of the laziest people you've ever met, but one who likes to keep up. This morning, for instance, we had Seth Myers' account of the birth of his second son. In the lobby of the condo or coop they live in. In the middle of the day. And the Uber driver who charged for the ride to the hospital that Mrs. Myers didn't get to take. So I told this story to my friend, a mother of five, and she reported on the birth of her first, on the big warm coat of the MA state trooper who had pulled her over for speeding. (It was a boy, and they both did fine.)

So, in the world right now, I see our biggest problem as being the fact that the climate is changing rapidly and dramatically, and one of our two major parties thinks it's cool to deny their belief in it. But lots of people in the world do accept the science, and are working as hard as they can to cope with the situation.

On the national front, we keep having elections with startling outcomes, but nobody wants to consider the possibility that they're just being stolen, unless they think the Russians did it. They don't think anyone else in the world could possibly have an interest in who is announced as the winner of an American election. I can think of people who'd have an interest.

And this is the end of what should probably have been my first post here, but I told you I was lazy. I'm going to try putting a smilie here, just so see what happens.

but 4000 is a long way off, surely?

See? I too still get the "wrong code, old-timer"reaction in the title bar of the post when I try to put in a smiley up there.
