I'm not on Twitter, but I do read certain news and correspondent feeds on there each day. I used to subscribe to the dead-tree version of The Guardian here in the UK for decades, but now that a monthly sub far exceeds the price of a high-speed net connection, I have to restrict myself to a small monthly contribution to the online paper.
I've been fascinated by Trump's Twitter feed since the start of his presidency. Back then he had about 30m followers. Now this has topped 50m (with another 200k piling on in the last couple of weeks). I've read that probably more than half of his followers are bots/fake accounts. What fascinates me is that despite gaining 20m followers, the number of likes for his tweets haven't increased exponentially the slightest bit in the past 18 months. If anything in the past few weeks they have decreased because of his troubles. Have a look at his posts and you'll see the same bunch of sycophants/bots posting there daily, I don't need to name names, if you read them you'll know to whom I'm referring. Very rarely does he rate above 100k likes for anything he posts.
Then look at President Obama's feed. A man who has been out of office for 18 months. 1.5m likes for a simple message on the death of Stephen Hawking. More than that for his Parkland and March For Life tweets. For a man obsessed with numbers and ratings I'm sure this must eat Trump up inside.
Now I know in the grand scheme of things that one shouldn't read much into a person's popularity on a social networking site, but after all, it is his go-to method for communicating with his supporters and he is supposed to be the first 'Twitter' president. I don't know much about the workings of Twitter, but I wonder how many of these followers have just been 'bought up' . Why aren't the bots contributing more, or are they beginning to give up on him too?
