London (15/22) - NYC (14/21) murder rates. Some background

If you've consumed almost any right wing news over the last few days (especially radio) it's clear that the knives are out. LONDON EXCEEDS NEW YORK CITY IN MURDERS they scream and then they turn to a knives vs. guns issue. I knew there had to be more to the story. These two CBS stories are pretty good (the first is more statistics) but I'm still not sure WHO is being attacked. As I heard in the radio just this morning "If it were white people being killed it would have been solved by now". There is a major rise in knife and acid attacks in London which tells me it could be an cultural thing.

London tallied 15 murders in February and 22 in March, slightly more than New York City for the same two months, which logged 14 in February and 21 in March, according to murder rate statistics provided to USA TODAY by London's Metropolitan Police and the New York Police Department.

Sean Yates, Scotland Yard's head of knife crime, said part of the rise could be blamed on courts not enforcing the "two strikes" law aimed at jailing those caught with a knife twice.

Police Commissioner Dick meanwhile blamed social media for the soaring rate, with 31 fatal stabbings so far this year.

"New York has been able to bring down serious violence through a public health approach," she told the BBC. "We need a proper strategy that looks at all of the issues. Knife crime and violent crime acts like an epidemic, so you need to go in at the source to cut it off and then you need to inoculate the future young people against it.

"Going in at source means major intervention work with youth workers, inoculating means going into schools, changing the social norms, educating kids, teaching them what it is to be a man, teaching them how they don't need to carry knives."
