(CNN)One of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School's most visible student activists will postpone his first year of college to devote time to political causes.
David Hogg has been accepted at the University of California, Irvine, "but he will not be going to college this year because he's decided to take a year off and work on the midterm elections," his mother, Rebecca Boldrick, told CNN Monday.
She said her son hopes to register and educate new voters and to "get people to vote."
Hogg, 17, is a senior at the Parkland, Florida, school where 17 people were fatally shot in February. Since then, he has emerged as a high-profile advocate for gun control measures, speaking at the March for Our Lives rally in Washington, being interviewed on TV and appearing on the cover of Time magazine.

I applaud his service to our country.
I'd heard that he got a lot of rejections and I don't imagine that Irvine was his first choice but he could do worse and in the interval one of the others might change their mind. Still if his activism had an adverse impact on any of his applications that would be a real injustice.

(42,334 posts)about how top tier colleges are putting way more kids on wait lists than ever before, and how unfair it is to the students who think they might have a chance. Thus, they put other schools on hold waiting to hear about their WL status. Only a small % ever get in.

(15,512 posts)I'm guessing he applied to Berkeley or UCLA and got shifted to Irvine. They probably made their decisions before the shooting so it wouldn't surprise me if they were congenial to reconsidering and offered him a spot in winter or fall of 2019. Once he starts at Irvine tho they'll be a lot less willing.

(42,334 posts)A very well regarded small, private liberal arts school. They came through that summer and we were able to negotiate a huge amount of aid ( cause we never could have afforded it).
Despite his being one of the only public HS kids there, it was the perfect place for him. And itnhas reaped immense career benefits.
I hope David Hogg has the same great experience.

(15,512 posts)As in all things persistence pays. I transferred to Cal as junior and hadn't heard from them until I finally called in August and talked to an admissions counselor who basically said okay you're in. I remember her saying "you have beautiful grades." Not sure what she was trying to tell me exactly but you don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
So hell yeah persistence pays!
