Here's hoping that someone tells them (or whoever is covering it) that people have access to the internet and don't need to watch all their schmaltzy commercials..or to wait to watch a re-run of events available online in real-time.
I'm old enough to remember the old-timey coverage where you would set your alarm clock to watch something that was on in the wee hours .(pre-vcr days), and how wonderful it was when the Olympics was on because then the stations actually had something on after the midnight sign offs.
If they want us to know all the back-stories of the athletes, why not a 2 or 3 night multi-hour special where all of them are profiled.
And then when the games begin, just set up cameras, and let us watch..
I don't need to know what Bob Costas had for lunch, or how much Dr Nancy liked the Shepherds' Pie..
A week before the events, just give us a leisurely tour of the events ahead, tell us about the athletes, and then just show the damned sports when they are happening..
And perhaps have someone film start-to finish footage of each event, and offer it as pay-per view later

(26,604 posts)But at least we have a real good awareness of what various athletes have tweeted and facebooked over the course of the games...

(10,021 posts)TV was one of them. I don't know what's coming but I'm not going to go out and buy some super-duper tv antenna anytime soon. Apparently all computers will be hooked up to our monitors and we can watch what we want, when we want.

(23,867 posts)Everything, and everyone is going 500 mph now. Everything is corporate at the speed of sound.
And where is this online Olympics you speak of? I'm dvr'ing the nbc stuff, and wouldn't mind turning them off.
Too fast, too much, too many. That's what's wrong with everything. I'm sounding like someone my own age now. All old and angry.

(12,017 posts)and I do recall with great fondness getting up early or staying up really late to see events.
i knew NBC didn't give a shit about covering the Olympics (it was validated) when they covered 3.5 hours of the women's road race to the detriment of ALL THE OTHER EVENTS HAPPENING AT THAT TIME. They picked the longest, most tedious event, that they could easily break into and follow their commercial schedule and allow for the insipid interviews.
Shortly after about 8:30 AM I made the decision to watch the rest online...

(20,805 posts)...because none of it will be 'tailored to the US audience'....*
*this is the bullshit excuse given by NBC after they deliberately edited out a segment honouring the victims of the 7/7 bombings that happened the day after London found out it had won the 2012 host-city bid in 2005...
**oh and that sniveling little turd Bob Costas got to lick Rmoney's balls about single-handedly saving the Utah games and chiding the IOC chair for not honouring the Munich massacre which had bugger all to do with the London games other than the last number in the year was a '2'.
FUCK NBC.

(8,153 posts)They're considering only showing the U.S. in the parade of nations (who cares about the others) and replacing the rest of the opening ceremony with clips from their Fall line-up of shows.
During each event the 10 hosts/commentators/reality-show-people will have a running commentary that replaces the audio. The event will be shown almost to the end, then will cut to a series of commercials. When it returns the 10 hosts will have a round-table discussion of an unrelated event and family member reactions, then it will replay the event again, stopping once more before the conclusion for another commercial break. When they return they will play the event's conclusion, once, then immediately switch to another event without comment.
Most events, however, will not be shown: Only commented upon.

(20,606 posts)What is it with people who have to post Olympic results as soon as they happen, even though they know it hasn't aired here yet?
Do they really think the rest of DU doesn't know how to use the internet?

(45,358 posts)Whenever there is a spike or a hard serve, the HD compression causes the ball the literally disappear until it reaches its target. I did some freeze frames and sure enough the ball isn't being rendered, other than at the start and end points.
This wasn't a problem on old analog TV's because the ball would blur and you could interpret the motion.
When the ball disappears while in play, sports stop being fun to watch.

(29,149 posts)CBS had them in 1960 (the first time they were broadcast) and NBC had them in 1964. ABC took over from 1968 to 1984. NBC has had them since 1988, and have them locked up through 2020. (These are all for the summer games--the winter games bounced around a bit more, but NBC has had them since 2002.)

(29,149 posts)The ratings for the opening ceremonies were higher than any opening ceremony not held in the US, and the ratings for Sunday night were higher than any opening Sunday other than LA in '84 or Atlanta in '96. So people are still interested in the coverage that NBC provides, even with the results being readily available in advance and the sometimes exasperating segments about back stories.
I think the reason they remain popular in spite of such things is that a lot of people take pleasure in watching them as a community event. Also, it seems many people actually like the human interest segments. I think they're hit and miss, personally--so my solution will be to use the DVR, give the broadcast a head start while I catch up on other things, and then fast forward through commercials and those non-competitive segments that don't interest me.

(33,688 posts)every Olympics telecast ABC ever did over and over and over again. That is the way it's supposed to be done, dumbasses. Jim McKay must be spinning in his grave.
