...we don't run on "deficit reduction" which only seems to matter when Democrats are in office and even then only to Republicans looking for an angle and their enablers in the media.

Republicans run up deficits.

Democrats take over, and get told by very serious people in the DC media circuit that deficits are important and people really care about them.

Democrats decide they have to make the hard cuts so that they can be seen as "serious".

People blame Democrats for the hard cuts.

Rinse, repeat.
