Each morning, bus driver braids hair for girl whose mother died

Isabella Pieri has become very good at taking care of herself. The 11-year-old gets ready for school on her own ever since her mother died two years ago from a rare disease.

Her father, who leaves for work early in the morning, has stepped up to the challenge of parenting on his own. But there are a few aspects of having a daughter that remain baffling for him. One of them is her hair.

Then one day, she noticed that her bus driver, Tracy Dean, was braiding another student’s hair into a style Isabella admired. Isabella told KSL-TV she summoned her courage and asked Dean to give her a hand, too. Dean said she’d be more than happy to. And the braiding began.

“It makes me feel like she’s a mom pretty much to me,” Isabella told KSL. “And it makes me excited for the next day to see what she does.”

The emotional connection to a lost mother to braiding one's hair . This is very powerful.

The dads might do more than beg.

That said, a man should know his limitations. My single-mom downstairs neighbor floated the idea of me taking care of her kid in the morning. I said ok if she is ok with her being blown dry with a leaf blower and sent to school in a hat and sweatpants.

There are really an extraordinary number of truly wonderful people out there, who go about doing their jobs and being everyday heroes to other people. We rarely hear about them and they don't seek the spotlight because they don't see themselves as anything other than regular folk.

We have to be reminded during these dark days in Trumpistan that most folks are good. Thanks for posting this story. I needed it this morning.

They also interact with children on so many levels.

They do not get the thanks they deserve . They get public criticism when something goes wrong.

They are probably not paid a living wage.

Stories like those warm my cold and hardened heart. Acts of kindness and humanity of all sizes do so much for the world around us. World religions and everything always try to teach us these sorts of values, but it seems like many people don’t get it.

Selfishly, I love doing something to make some stranger’s day. I feel like a good person as a result - and I’m sure the person on the receiving end feels good too.

That should be a slogan or something..,

“Help others! Not because it’ll make some stranger feel special, but because you’ll feel better as a result!”

Little kids losing a parent...

No act of kindness is too small to do. That was a lovely braid!

Women get the importance and pride of hair. Growing up girls spend a huge amount of time on their hair, dress-ups, all just in play. As teenagers they vary it even more when they add makeup to their experimentation.

It would be a truly odd thing for a father to even understand that, much less help out.

Kids are better at this than you think. At 12, my daughter had her first "job" (tips only) assisting a professional hair braider at an ice rink for the competitors. She was able to do even the most complicated braids--hearts, Renaissance style,
French braids, all by herself as well as any adult.
