WASHINGTON (AP) The Republican majority in Congress was on a glide path to the midterms, having passed tax cuts into law and backed off budget battles with a year-end funding package. But President Trump was not impressed.
Trump started picking apart some GOP accomplishments, including the big budget bill, and complaining that others, namely his border wall, remained undone.
Now, Congress returns from spring break Monday scrambling to compile a to-do list that will satisfy a president they desperately need to be promoting their achievements, not undermining them, as they prepare to hit the campaign trail.
A lot of members would prefer to spend the rest of the year focusing on getting re-elected, but theres pressure from the White House
to deliver more policy wins before facing voters, said Alex Conant, a GOP strategist.
But belittling lawmakers and badgering them to work doesnt help instill voter confidence in Republicans already facing an enthusiasm gap with Democrats fired up to go to the polls, strategists say. They need Trump on their side, not piling on.

(16,786 posts)That the tax cuts are not going over with Wal-Mart shoppers as their favorite China made products are costing more.
Those are the voters the Dems can reach out to, along with Farmers and small business owners, the rest of us who will be paying for Trump's follies and big mouth.

(60,010 posts)Esp. the House has been admitting they will lose in the election, which is why so many are "retiring".
Admittedly, McConnell has been using Trump as much as he can, but I cannot believe anyone with a lukewarm IQ thinks he is still an asset.

(10,829 posts)Hell. They just don't like the heat building around them. They wanted to celebrate the tax deform, only the public isn't celebrating. Ooops. They wanted to celebrate the budget? That's their baseline frigging job. Of course, they wanted to spend the rest of their time running for reelection. They'd already telegraphed the message that no other legislative business would get done between now and then. The Trumpster is throwing a wet blanket on that idea.
