For Candy Fans, the Only Thing Worse Than Necco Wafers Is No Necco Wafers

The Wall Street Journal:

Necco wafers have been around since before the Civil War—and plenty of detractors would argue they taste like it, too.

The flavors have been described as “tropical drywall,” “plaster surprise,” and “attic citrus.” One Twitter commentator calls it a candy that “only a psychopath would like.”

And yet, like anything appreciated only after it is gone, Neccos are suddenly having a moment.

For Candy Fans, the Only Thing Worse Than Necco Wafers Is No Necco Wafers
Last month, the New England Confectionery Co.—creators of the iconic wafer since 1847 and the oldest continually operated candy maker in the U.S.—served notice to its hometown of Revere, Mass., that it would close operations in May if it didn’t find a new owner.

More importantly, no Necco would mean no SKY BARs...

They were all made at the same time decades ago there are warehouses full of both circus peanuts and candy corn. They let out a little of the stock slowly and methodically as to not deplete them too soon. I’ve heard from sterling sources there are at least 5 decades of both left in stock

Necco Wafers are my favorite candy. I am a sugar freak and these have been one of my favorites for decades.

This is frightening news.

But I've always loved the dryness of Necco Wafers.

Oh, well. I guess I'll stock up before they disappear. Then I'll have to switch over to Tums. (wink)

I think they must be an acquired taste. My brother and sister and I would buy them now and then. They were cheap and lasted a long time. I hope that someone buys the company.
