(32,886 posts)All he has to show for it is a distant second place.
TCJ70
(4,387 posts)...40-some percent is hardly a distant second when there are only two options. Regardless, neither of them should run.
mythology
(9,527 posts)The poll listed Sanders, Biden, Warren, Booker, Harris and Gillibrand and it wasn't asking which one of the six you would support. Respondents could choose as few or as many as they wanted and the respondents didn't rank by preference.
TCJ70
(4,387 posts)In the last primary he got 43% of the vote...now 46% of Dem respondents said theyd every likely to support him. They were asked to consider each candidate individually. Changes nothing about what I said.
Relax.
karynnj
(59,503 posts)The question was not, who are you for. It is whether you were likely to support him. It is way too early to be polling for 2020 and what this is reflects that the two people polled with high name recognition were "approved" on a question where you did not have to choose between candidates.
You can not really tell from this, which of the two are favored by more people. Theoretically, there are 4 groups of people - those who approve of both, those who approve of neither, those who approve of Sanders, but not Biden and those who approve of Biden and not Sanders. We know from the numbers that there have to be some in the last group. As to which one is the favorite of the two, it would come down to how the group that approves of both chose between them plus the net difference between the last two groups.

I do not want a candidate that just talks about change. I want one with a plan to make it happen and we need a democratic HOUSE and/or SENATE to even start that process.

(4,033 posts)Bernie, Joe, and Hillary are just too old! Hillary would be 73 in 2020. Joe would be 77 and Bernie would be 78.
We need new blood. Elder statesmen (and women) have a place, but it is not in the White House. You can't really attract first time voters and get them excited with folks who can be their grandparents. It is time for us old fogies to turn the reins over to a younger generation.

(17,276 posts)I don't think anyone who is 70+ should run. I mean, think about them winning and then serving for eight years. A 70 year old will finish up when he/she is 78. Yikes. And the older the candidate, the worse that gets.

(52,162 posts)and not have any chance of having your post removed. Say for example a post about Cory Booker and Deval Patrick which talked about eating watermelon. Or a post about Bill Richardson and Julian Castro which talked about eating beans. Simply amazing we can do this to the old and no one bats an eye. Lord knows I am not a huge defender of Sanders nor even of Biden, but neither one have shown any sign of any ill health at all in recent years (Biden had very serious health issues in the late 1980's to my knowledge Sanders never has).
WhiteTara
(29,715 posts)if it were say, Madilyn Albright and Hillary Clinton if they were making those kinds of noises. Of course, I'm old too and currently using a walker because of a broken foot, so I guess that's why the image came to me. I am sorry to offend you. But Biden will be 77 and Sanders 78 in 2020. How could either serve more than one term?

(29,715 posts)I don't use the walker all the time, but the boot is so exhausting to wear all day and night, so that gives relief. But I did think it was funny, false teeth in pockets, bathrobes flapping, racing down the street with their walkers showing us all how buff they are.

(22,578 posts)and we don't need another old, white man as the leader of this nation, I would support Biden--an actual Democrat of decades over Sanders who just uses the party for his own end because he knows he could never be elected as an independent.
I am confident that Biden would be capable of getting things done while there are certainly many in government who don't like Sanders.
Let's hope that after the midterms there is a viable Democratic candidate who is not a baby boomer who wants to lead this country. Be aware that the tens of millions of supporters of Trump and conservatives in general will be going nowhere so even having the Democrats taking the White House and Congress would only be winning a temporary battle and unless the Left remains vigilant and turns out to support Democratic candidates, then the GOP will be back in power and we will see another Trump-like president--maybe one who is more competent in pursuing their goals.

It's not a job for an old man. The job adds 10 years to those who take it seriously for every 4 year term.
Would you prefer an 18 year old brain surgeon? A 95 year old carpenter?
To ignore the fact that some jobs are better served by those of a certain age is not ageist, it's facing reality.

(33,643 posts)Schiff, Booker, Harris, Kennedy, Gavin Newsome.
I very loosely prefer, for electability reasons, to have one white, one AA, and either two males, or one male, one female. I don't especially care which is the Prez candidate, but Harris would be probably be my fifth choice, just because we lost last time with a female candidate. At least as things stand presently, I have to think that a Liberal Californian Female US Senator (don't get me wrong, that's my home state, and I love her) would have a very hard time.
I don't think that's RIGHT, by any stretch, it's not that I wouldn't LOVE a female POTUS ... cause I would, but I think Harris is best as VP at this time. Problem there would be she's the longest-standing US Senator (I think), and hence would be 'Senior' to all these other men in a sense. So that complicates things ...
But I'd take any of those four dudes (except Newsome, can't have 2 Californians) as POTUS & Kamala as VP all day long, or any of the two dudes.
BTW, would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see both Biden and Al Gore as Cabinet Members ... both of them would be phenomenal in a variety of Cabinet Positions.

For perspective, Wikipedia offers this snapshot of the race for the 2008 nomination, taken several months nearer the primaries than the survey in the OP
CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll
Aug 30 Sep 2, 2006
Hillary Clinton 37%,
Al Gore 20%,
John Edwards 11%,
John Kerry 11%,
Russ Feingold 3%,
Bill Richardson 3%,
Mark Warner 3%,
Evan Bayh 2%,
Joe Biden 2%,
Tom Vilsack 1%
The eventual nominee isn't even in the poll!

(1,399 posts)Is that after two years of incessant whining about Sanders being divisive and costing us the election by every single prominant centrist talking head and pundit AND Sanders being a 100% known quantity, only 12% of Democrats were not "not very likely" to vote for him in the primary.
Interesting also is the fact that 8% said the same thing about Joe.

(26,060 posts)but while I would vote for Bernie if he were the candidate, I wouldn't be thrilled. I would give no money, wouldn't knock on one door, not one phone call and would focus on other races.
