If the Anti-Saloon League could be consigned to ancient history, so can the National Rifle Association.
Remember the Anti-Saloon League? Of course you don't. It's a musty, dusty relic in history's cellar -- a cask of vinegar where once was a mighty potion.
Similarities? Oh, my.

Into the dustbin with them and other groups that seek to reduce civil liberties.

(38,335 posts)7. What the fuck have guns got to do with civil liberties?
The second amendment is an ugly anachronism just as the 3/5 person rule was. It's current legal interpretation is bullshit.
Gun fetishes are disgusting.
Gun fetishism will go the way of smoking in public and drunk driving. Everyone has the power to resist dangerous gun fetishists, to say, "Oh, hell no, not in my house, not at my work, not on my street."
Most people don't care enough about guns to bother owning one. Most gun owners have one or two safely locked away that they rarely think about.
It's the disgusting gun culture (including bad cops) bringing us all this grief.

(34,185 posts)8. The Bill of Rights' purpose is to protect civil liberties.
Some of the amendments were designed for things not particularly relevant today's issues, but nevertheless, they are still there until some serious voting happens.

On the other hand, the NRA membership has grown. Gun sales are good. So, does the parallel really work?
