Lakewood Cake Shop Refuses Wedding Cake To Gay Couple

Chick-fil-A’s president spoke out against gay marriage last week, sparking a huge uproar in the gay community, and now the issue is spilling over to a Colorado bakery.

The owner of Masterpiece Cake Shop in Lakewood refused to bake a wedding cake for a local gay couple and now people are pushing a boycott against the owner.

Shop owner Jack Phillips probably didn’t think he was going to be wading into a civil rights debate a week ago when he told the gay couple that he would not make a cake for their wedding, but that’s exactly what has happened.

found via Talkleft, which comments: "It seems Masterpiece is violating Colorado law which prohibits retail businesses from discriminating against people because of sexual orientation or marital status, among other reasons."

At the original article website, the top-voted comments (voting doesn't require registration) basically argue that businesses have the right to refuse service and that the couple could've chosen another bakery.

Imo, being 'closeted' gay is a product of culture, someday, when our culture pays no more mind to ones sex life than it does to ones eye color, being 'in the closet' will be far rarer.

Otoh, being 'closeted' (or openly) fascist is a sickness and arguably a matter of choice.

Which begs the question, how much better would America be if those who actively believe that being gay is a choice, instead believed that being fascist is a choice. I can imagine Christian anti-fascist intervention programs, the end of the gop, hell maybe even the odd bakery that openly refuses to sell wedding cakes to openly fascist couples. I could live in a country like that!

“If gays come in and want to order birthday cakes or any cakes for any occasion, graduations, or whatever, I have no prejudice against that whatsoever,” Phillips said. “It’s just the wedding cake, not the people, not their lifestyle.”

to keep an eye on "emerging markets."

Oh well, if this cake maker doesn't want the happy couple's money, I'm sure someone else would be happy to take it. Business is business.

I'd take the order of every customer that walked through my door, and made sure they told all their friends, family, and wedding attendees who made the cake for them.

Gay, straight, whatever type of couple...business is business!

Guess that guy has enough money, he can turn people away.

by appealing to gay couples, it would increase his business.

but then again, this jackass is a homophobe, which seems to short circuit logic.
