General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsKaty Tur has decided to let all hang out.
At the very beginning of the campaign she was very careful to pull her punches with Trump in order to maintain access.
After the election, she got her own on air program and was a lot more critical of him.
Then came her book, in which she made it clear that she found him repulsive. She even offered that she found the color of his face to be orange like marmalade on toast.
Now she has totally let loose. Several times a day she will call him a liar and state that he has no credibility and that he is a threat to democracy. She is outraged at this man, outraged at the fact that he is the president.

(90,769 posts)NBC assumed he was not going to be campaigning for more than a few weeks, so they put this fairly low-level reporter on the job... That was Katy, and she ended up going on the full ride, including the call-outs, the insults, and the threats of physical violence against her.
She probably had to do a full-on detox program after November. She really deserves having her own show.

(4,341 posts)How about calling it for what it is? LIES...
It is like people who are interviewed on TV, "the president misrepresents the truth", "there is no evidence of what he tweeted", etc, etc...
Please, just call it for what it is, a lie...the president lies, Sarah Huckabee Sanders lies, etc. etc.

(28,151 posts)I remember during the election catching a blurb on NPR. The host was giggling with some reporter on the phone about how some "journalists" had made Trump into a "cottage industry".
I say fuck them all. They played a very big role in giving us this nightmare. It'll take more than "he's a stinky poopie-head" now to achieve redemption.

(28,151 posts)The fact remains, he made her rich and famous. Along with others. Yes, I'm sure they are just uber awesome, saying he's a liar now and everything. Heroes I tell ya!
Put me in the unimpressed column.

(373 posts)I personally think she's very impressive. She took tons of abuse on the campaign trail with him, and kept her cool.

(28,151 posts)In fact, I don't think of Katy Tur as a "shill". But I'll take a hard pass on considering her a brave hero. Few in TV journalism are. Way too few if you ask me. But they sure are rich and famous.
I'm about done making the same points over and over. If you are so emotionally invested in your TeeVee heroes then go, celebrate the great bravery and unspeakable horrors they've selflessly endured. You won't see me at that party.
Bye now.

(53,410 posts)During the campaign Katy Tur was herded into pens along with reporters who werent Trump shills and verbally abused and threatened by his base.
Nevertheless she persisted in her job and stayed with his campaign to the end. Then she wrote a book about it and it was a hit, probably because she told the truth.
Its a mystery why some people think journalists arent allowed to express personal views after being treated so badly. Would you subject yourself to the kind of vituperative hatred that Trumps base spews? How does that translate into being a shill?
JNelson6563
(28,151 posts)Where did I say that? Brilliant at self promotion? Yeah. How to capitalize on the ruining of America. So admirable.

(53,410 posts)And dont address a single example put forth in this thread. But your lumping of everything into vague generalities without pointing out a single example is what you think passes for upstanding communication?
Why not post a link or example of what a bad journalist she is to back up your condemnation. You could shut us all up by doing that.

(12,590 posts)1. Does being on television -- especially cable -- automatically make you famous?
2. What's wrong with being famous? In fact, what is "famous"? If you approached 20 people and asked them to identify Katy Tur (without identifying her profession) from a line-up of photos, how many of those people do you think would make the right choice? What if you asked 100 people?
3. If you are doing the job right, what's wrong with being well-compensated for it? Rachel Maddow is the exception, not the rule.
4. How do you know how much Katy Tur is being paid? Just because you're on television doesn't mean you're rich. I worked at a local television station here in Palm Springs, and I know they were paid so poorly that one of our anchors had to take a second job as a hospice nurse in order to make ends meet. Yet I saw a LTTE asserting that our anchors were getting paid a lot.
5. Is it o.k. to write a book based on your life experiences? Is it all right for that book to be a best seller?
6. Do you disagree with her journalism skills, her point of view, or with her being "rich and famous," to use your words.
Just wondering what your logic is in criticizing someone who's doing their job, and doing it well.

I am SO impressed with her work, her quick wit, her excellent questions, and her incisive comments - like the one just today wherein she posed a subtle quip at the end of a segment regarding trump's constant lying and his defenders claiming it's merely "being sloppy" about whether her parents would have called her "sloppy" when they and she both knew she was lying.

(14,249 posts)She did an excellent job on her campaign coverage and put up with all manner of crap from him. And many times I saw her push back on the free ride others have him. She also tried to report on the uglier side of his campaign but was often cut off by anchors.

(51,623 posts)"From 2006 to 2009, she dated then-MSNBC political commentator and sportscaster Keith Olbermann".
"Nevertheless, she was involved with Keith Olbermann for three years. The fact about their age difference didnt matter to them; though Tur was 26 and Keith 51 when they got married. Katy Tur and Olbermann started dating each other since June 2006, planning to extend their relationship lifelong as a husband-wife relationship someday.
They had been loyal to each other since the early days and had started living together as well. They shared their mutual respect and coordination towards each other as they didnt want to be dragged into any controversial issues."

(14,920 posts)......"Laura Ingrahams boyfriends have made for strange political bedfellows at times. She has not stuck to dating only conservatives, although she is known for her own right-wing views.
In fact, Ingraham once dated the outspoken liberal pundit Keith Olbermann years ago, who later had his own television show on politics on MSNBC. Although they share in common punditry and the public eye, their politics are the polar opposite. However, Olbermann told The New Yorker that politics did not drive the pair apart. Olbermann dated Ingraham briefly a decade ago, the magazine reported in 2008.
"There were a few problems, he told The New Yorker. There were a few things that I could see were going to be impediments. Oddly, they were not political things. The magazine article did not elaborate, but it quoted Ingraham as criticizing Olbermann on the air. I believe MSNBC really needs to bring in a medical team at this point. . . . I dont know what happened to him. I really dont. He didnt use to be this way, The New Yorker quoted her as saying.

(40,217 posts)I think there is often a lack of understanding of journalism. It isn't the job of a reporter to give political opinions. That is someone else's job, like Rachel Maddow or Lawrence O'Donnell. The job of a reporter is not the same as a political commentator.

(14,249 posts)In fact, she tried to provid balance that others didnt by talking about the ugliness of his campaign rallies and the emptiness of his promises - but she was usually ignored.
For example, I distinctly remember he reporting on the day that Corey Lewandowski was alleged to have manhandked a woman. Katy started talking about how violent and frightening the rallies wer and how unsafe the journalists felt. She talked really fast as if she was trying to get it in before she was cut off. And, sure enough, the anchor cut her off and went to someone else. It was obvious shed been waiting for a chance to report on this and she grabbed the opportunity and got as much in as she could.
I have big respect for her.

(8,067 posts)and she DEFINITELY didn't want to cover him. She had been working in Europe and was loving it when she was given the assignment. It was when most folks thought he was a joke. It was a bummer for her. I don't hold her responsible at all. There are plenty of other who have really done harm- Such as Chuck Toad and Andrea Mitchell (who has always been HORRIBLE to Hillary). There are a lot in the media to blame but IMHO Katy isn't one of them.

(58,785 posts)I'm not saying she likes Trump, only that that is not what is happening.
I'm just glad her career doesn't require her to turn this stuff on Hillary, because when she's been called on to report on that subject she's produced to order. With the kind of conviction she'd bring to an audition as Andrea Mitchell's replacement.
Btw, anyone know where the problems between her and Ari Melber and Rachel Maddow came from? A real tension has shown up with both a number of times in those transitions from her time to theirs. She's not nearly as good at repartee as they are and always came off badly when she tried to take them on. Rachel handled the ones I saw very decently and professionally, but for a while Melber had actually started baiting Tur, and she had good reason for the nervous dread she started displaying with him, even though she'd instigated a lot of it. Always wondered why.

(1,389 posts)We can only hope that they can expand their highlighting of good investigative journalism into other topics other than watching and commenting on the train wreck that is destroying our country. Somehow I doubt that things like holding big corporations accountable are going to happen. It would be wonderful if Ms Tur would turn her attention on campaign finance reform as a logical next step after the fall of the Orange dolt.
