San Diego Zoo Hippo Lays Egg

Visitors to the San Diego Zoo got a special treat today when Henrietta, one of the zoo's hippos, laid an egg. Lead biologist at the zoo, Dr. Kimberly Luntz, stated that this was, indeed, a very rare occasion as only one other hippo in captivity ever laid an egg. Few people realize that the hippo, along with the platypus and spiny ant eater, are part of a group of egg laying mammals known as "monotremes". Proud mother, Henrietta, certainly seemed surprised when she lay the egg, as evidenced by her reaction in the video posted below. She will have to wait six months for her new baby to hatch, though, according to Dr. Luntz. Link: http://www.latimes.com/dp-top10.aprilfools.pg.0401-photogallery.html

I live in San Diego but haven't watched the local news today. Now I will. An Easter hippo egg...very cool!

Their eggs are more neon blue, like robin eggs.

In the vid you can see the real color, and it is blue. I'm almost tempted to remove the top picture so as not to mislead anyone.

If you use Chrome, right-click and choose Open link in incognito window. Works like a charm.

The site I looked at equated "echidna" with "ant eater", but that is just not right. They are only distantly related.

you would have seen the egg the mom was sitting on. With this video, you have to use your imagination. Try to imagine just how large that egg was!
