New NY Law bans Police having sex with people in custody

.

New York lawmakers passed a bill Thursday that bans police officers from having sex with people in custody, the New York Daily News reported.

The bill, which says that detained people are unable to consent to sex, would close a legal loophole that let police officers avoid sexual assault charges by saying sex with people in custody was consensual.

Last month, BuzzFeed reported that many states do not have laws explicitly defining sexual contact between officers and detainees as nonconsensual. At least six states have passed bills to change such laws.

Don't know which is worse.... The fact that this behavior is so rampant, a law is needed...

Or the fact that a specific law is necessary, as prudence

Men cruising the streets authorized to pick up women, and boys etc? No matter how well a department was managed, a law would be necessary.

My own first thought was "What's wrong with the old one?" Because surely this was made illegal long ago. Then I remembered NY's nasty not-so secret. NO old one -- that's the shocker.

In order to stop cops from having sex with people under their custody.

That’s some banana republic shit right there.

This behavior goes on everywhere and has been since people have been put into custody.

We have laws preventing people from consuming certain plants and fungi, but not for custodians raping their wards.

This could go at least two different ways.

The police could coerce consent. Maybe arrest somebody and offer to let them go or treat them better if they put out.

Or the police could arrest somebody and the person arrested could offer sex in exchange for dropping the charges or maybe hiding evidence.

We'll only really hear about the first.

If not, this is ridiculous. There shouldn't have to be a law against raping detainees or anyone.

Let's get them to pass a law that you can't shoot people that are in custody. Maybe we can correct behavior with a gazillion laws. Or maybe just hire public servants that aren't so fucking stupid?

Unfortunately, there are police officers that abuse their power. That's why they're drawn to the job in the first place.

I suppose it makes sense, I mean, once we start writing laws like that we might make it unlawful to beat or kill suspects in custody.
