Tributes

Many stars win a place in the nation’s hearts – few manage it in a variety of roles like Geoffrey Hughes.

The actor, who has died aged 68, was a renowned scene stealer as cheery binman Eddie Yeats in Coronation Street and slobbish Onslow in Keeping Up Appearances.

His screen presence lifted many a plot as lovable rogue Vernon Scripps in Heartbeat.

Yesterday after his death from prostate cancer, tributes flowed in from the many fans of his TV and film career which spanned nearly five decades.

Friends and co-stars spoke warmly of a man who they loved working with.

Geoffrey shunned the trappings of a showbiz lifestyle, preferring the company of folk musicians and farmers.

Odd. The local PBS station keeps re-running "Keeping Up Appearances" and I just watched the "travel brochures" episode last night for the umpteenth time.
