Hooray for Maryland: the legislature just passed Automatic Voter Registration, sending it to Governor Hogan's desk! Hogan may veto, but the bill passed both chambers with veto-proof majorities.

(43,209 posts)He tries so hard to attempt to give off a moderate vibe in order to survive in a blue state, but in the end, he's just another Republican through and through.
And a Republican pretending to be a moderate in a blue state might not be enough if the Blue Tsnuami's big enough.
Who do the Democrats have lined up to run against him this year?

(86,006 posts)...he's in pretty good political shape, with three challengers speculated as rivals as far back as 2015 still the only ones mentioned - and still trailing, at this point, by 10pts or so.
One big name, locally, Ben Jealous, might have an edge with name recognition and the prospect of the first black governor for the state might generate interest. A strong campaign could see some snapback here from republicans who are no strangers to rallying the deplorables, and there might be some baggage from the longtime pol.
Others include Prince Georges County Executive Rushern L. Baker III, and
Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz.

(2,062 posts)I dont see anyone who will beat Hogan in MD. I am a solid Kennedy Liberal, but just think O'Malley didnt have as great of a governorship as he could have. I do believe this cost us a democratic governor the last election.

(131,175 posts)A former Governing Magazine Public Official of the Year, Governor OMalley was elected in 2006 and re-elected in 2010. His 2013 legislative successes were described in a Baltimore Sun editorial as without many parallels in recent Maryland history.
With a balanced approach of spending cuts, regulatory reform, and modern investment in education, innovation, and infrastructure, Governor OMalley and his Administration made better choices that delivered better results, including:
Fastest rate of job growth in the region.
#1 ranking for best public schools in America for an unprecedented five years in a row (Education Week).
#1 ranking for holding down the cost of college tuition (College Board).
#1 ranking for innovation and entrepreneurship for two years running (U.S. Chamber of Commerce).
Under the Governors leadership, Maryland also ranks:
#1 nationally in median income,
#1 in Ph.D. scientists and researchers per capita,
#1 in Research and Development, and
#1 in businesses owned by women.
Martin O'Malley:
1. Ended death penalty in Maryland
2. Prevented fracking in Maryland and put regulations in the way to prevent next GOP Gov Hogan fom easily allowing fracking.
3. Provided health insurance for 380,000
4. Reduced infant mortality to an all time low.
5. Provided meals to thousands of hungry children and moved toward a goal for eradicating childhood hunger.
6. Enacted a $10.10 living wage and a $11. minimum wage for State workers.
7. Supporter the Dream Act
8. Cut income taxes for 86% of Marylanders (raised taxes on the rich).
9. Reformed Marylands tax code to make it more progressive.
10. Enacted some of the nations most comprehensive reforms to protect homeowners from foreclosure.
Mother Jones magazine called him the best candidate on environmental issues.

I do believe you have not seen the whole picture.

(45,546 posts)but most polls still have Hogan the likely winner for a general election.
It's frustrating. Dems really need to prepare a bench of good candidates for opportunities like a blue wave election year. You would think a blue state would have more candidates running.
Ken Ulman, Howard County Exec hasn't declared yet.

(31,261 posts)I would pick one of the County Executives as my choice because they have the executive experience.
