Trump is not going to take over America. He is going to lose and lose badly. What he has done and is doing is taking advantage of our great democracy. We expect presidents to act within the norms. Trump has taken advantage of all norms, all morals. He will pay a big fucking price.
He has so many powerful enemies, soon he will run out of luck. It will happen all of the sudden.
America cannot be killed off so easily.

(9,527 posts)I think before everything is over, we will end up making some of those norms legal requirements. I think the nepotism and emoluments clause in particular. I'd like to see the tax releases required but that might be hard constitutionally.

(14,532 posts)I think all candidates for the general election should have to pass a security clearance before being able to run in the general. Hell I have had to pass them on occasion for trivial shit like getting on certain bases and all ports.
So why should someone who has access to the most sensitive info that can not pass a security clearance be able to work in the Oval office?

(52,243 posts)Odds are really, really good he never sees the inside of a jail cell.
The same doctors who lied to says hes in perfect health will suddenly decide hes on deaths door and cant possibly serve time.
Worse outcome possible for him is he retires to a life of wealthy leisure on some island paradise.
Well, at least, thats the worst America can deal out. Putin could do worse....

(17,276 posts)His crimes have to be exposed and indisputable. Has to walk out of the WH in shame so that 95 percent of us see and know the truth. There will always be nuts, but the vast majority have to see what he really has been doing to us. To see what he really is--and isn't.

(38,428 posts)When Nixon was on the way out, that is after the investigation got very close to him, erased tapes, obvious lies, and it appeared that he was going to be impeached...still 25 -27 percent supported him..I believe that is the extent of Trumps final support.. (you can look up the Nixon numbers.)
Nevertheless, 25 percent in favor of an authoritarian government is awful. That 25 percent will support Trump no matter what, and it will blame the "media" for the situation. Keep in mind not all of them vote. Who knows how many vote..But they are there. I believe they have always been there. It is up to the rest of us to prevent them from ever taking over.
Keep this in mind, Hitler never had more than 37 percent vote in a free competitive election. That is two more than what you are talking about. I don't think Trump has that much, but I do think 25 percent think he can do no wrong. And that is no matter what Trump does, he can do no wrong..

(18,125 posts)I hope that's all there is. It just seems like there are a lot of people who seem to worship him. I don't remember this kind of idolatry during Nixon's years. Trump is clearly better with the media and is able to instill fear in Republican politicians better than Nixon. Republicans in Congress are afraid to cross him.
Maybe once Trump is out of office, the knives will come out. There will still be a group who will follow him. Nazis, racists, bigots, etc.

(870 posts)In 1648, Colchester was a walled town with a castle and several churches and was protected by the city wall. The story given was that a large cannon, which the website claimed was colloquially called Humpty Dumpty, was strategically placed on the wall. A shot from a Parliamentary cannon succeeded in damaging the wall beneath Humpty Dumpty which caused the cannon to tumble to the ground.
Mueller will be like that Parliamentary cannon that succeeds in damaging the wall that Humpty Dumpty placed himself, (Republican System) & (Trump,Inc) and it will tumble to the ground, shattered into uncountable pieces. Never to be put back together by Trump loyalist nor Republican System !!!

(9,670 posts)Had Trump never been "elected" President, he and his family and cohorts may have never been caught in flagrante delicto.
Once sworn into office, though, his crimes are in full public view, but now he has the most potent constitutional protection against incarceration of any American citizen, as well as an almost-unlimited array of defenses, both legal and extra-constitutional, at his disposal.
This is a showdown between due process and the ultimate constitutional manipulation. Sure wish the Founding Fathers had had a time machine and could have foreseen some of this. We really need a constitutional backstop that is sorely lacking.

(5,810 posts)forwards. If anyone understands what options we have, it is them. Occasionally, we get signals from them that all is not lost, but I think many of us are on the ragged edge just from the uncertainty and feeling of being off balance. I dont know exactly why this is being allowed to continue but my sense of it is that we a building to a climax very soon when the truth will come out. Those scholars have their work cut out for them.

(4,066 posts)45's desire to seek revenge on Obama by dismantling everything Obama did and to try to one up Obama has made him more insane. To see his attempts to "win" turn around and beat him by demolishing his entire family would be true justice.

(7,947 posts)Well, probably not-- he could stay in court until he gets so old, no one would bother to jail him.
But Kushner? Donnie Jr? Yeah, I think they might end up in prison stripes.
And Melania will dump him, and Ivanka will realize he got her children's daddy put in jail, and he'll be alone. And he's nowhere near as rich as he claims, so he might even end up broke.
I can dream. After this just pure maliciousness against an FBI agent, well, I have absolutely no sympathy at all for Trump. Never did, but I used to think he was human at least.

(14,492 posts)I can't begin to conceive how many years it will take, and how many thousands of court man-hours will be spent before the final end of this dilemma is marked. There will be hundreds of court cases and hundreds of books written.
Then, there's the somewhat separate hangover from this Congress that will be with us for decades.
Just to think - only two short years ago, I thought my retirement was going to be worry-free in the political realm. Damn.
