General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI said this to a Trump voter at work and his face turned red with embarrassment.
I update all the Trump voters I know about the investigation. I enjoy it, it's my way of sticking it to their dumb asses. They don't have a fucking clue.
I informed a Trump voter at work, who is religious, that Mueller had just subpoenaed Trump org. and I updated him on Stormy Daniels. He said we have different political views. I told him this is not about politics. This is about sane and insane. I then asked him, how can a religious person like yourself vote for a guy who was fucking a porn star while his third wife was pregnant? His face turned bright red and he looked away.
Some Trump voters are slowly starting to get it. I have said this before, Trump voters will become infamous. They will be remembered. They will become a punchline.

(15,260 posts)We'll all end up the same.
History, especially from the 100-1,000 year view, doesn't get too detailed into the psychologies, more the effects.
And in the end, archaeologists will dig through our rubble (hopefully not too radioactive after 100,000 years) and will marvel at the evidence of that species going to great length to do itself in.

(8,052 posts)and the student activists of the White Rose (executed in 1943 for printing and distributing anti-Nazi leaflets).
There was Rev. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Hans von Dohnanyi, Rev. Martin Niemoeller, among many others, all of whom also paid with their lives. Then too there were the many German artists, musicians, actors, scientists--from Thomas Mann to Albert Einstein to Marlene Dietrich to George Grosz--who became refugees and in one way or another joined the Allied effort to defeat their native land.
But I suppose you're being sarcastic by saying "good Germans"--using the phrase the way it was used during the first few decades after the war, to refer to the vast majority of Germans who kept their heads down and went along with what was happening until it was too late.
Hopefully it's not too late for us. Then again, we now live in a world stockpiled with nuclear weapons, which means the capacity for destruction placed in very few (and very small) hands dwarfs even that of Hitler.
So we are both more empowered to resist because of the strength of our institutions--and less powerful if it comes down to an actual nuclear conflagration. Germans in 1933 had had less than two decades experience with anything resembling democracy, and so their democratic institutions were able to be strangled pretty much at birth. On the other hand, not even a madman like Hitler could destroy the entire planet in less than an hour.
I think the most dangerous time for us all will be the run up to the November elections. If Trump and his enablers really believe that the Democrats will take either house of Congress, there's no telling what they're liable to spring on us.

(10,175 posts)The German military intelligence assisted a resistance movement. Interesting that intelligence organizations seem to be the beating heart of resistance movements.
thucythucy
(8,052 posts)German military intelligence -- the Abwehr-- provided cover for resistance figures and double agents to travel to and from Switzerland and Sweden so they could meet with representatives of the Allied services.
There's a story--and though this appears in several books it might only be a story--that British intelligence had an opportunity to assassinate Admiral Canaris--the head of the Abwehr--while he visited Spain during the war, but that the head of SIS nixed the operation. This was reported to Stalin by Kim Philby, the Russian mole, who interpreted it as the Allies trying to double cross the Russians by entering into a separate peace with Hitler. The other interpretation, however, is that the head of British intelligence knew that Canaris was in fact a British asset, and so it was important he stay in place.
We may never know for sure all the ins and outs of this story. Canaris was however removed from his role as the head of the Abwehr after the July 20 attempt on Hitler's life, tried in a secret court, and executed just as the war was ending.

(1,990 posts)He found temporary refuge there, while all the time working to oppose Hitler. He was running an underground seminary, working to oppose Nazi influence on the official Lutheran church. He knew what Hitler was, but chose to return to Germany anyway. He could have stayed in London, where he would have been safe.
As intelligence services go, the Abwehr was surprisingly ineffective. Perhaps this was no accident?
After an attempted assassination of Hitler failed, an investigation resulted in Bonhoeffer and other Abwehr members being arrested. Bonhoeffer was hanged in April 1945.
