Preet Bharara suggests Sessions is 'the weakest and most craven Attorney General in modern times'

BY JACQUELINE THOMSEN - 03/17/18 08:04 AM EDT

Former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara suggested Saturday that Attorney General Jeff Sessions was the “weakest and most craven Attorney General in modern times.”

Bharara’s tweet came just hours after Sessions fired former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe. President Trump fired Bharara last year after Bharara refused to resign from his post.

Bharara was referring to former Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, who served under former President George W. Bush.

Gonzalez was criticized for supporting the Bush administration’s policy on torture, and faced accusations that the Justice Department improperly eavesdropped on American citizens under his watch. He was also scrutinized over the removal of several U.S. attorneys.

There have been suggestions that, had he not followed Trump's instructions and fired McCabe, Trump would have fired Sessions for cause and replaced him with someone who would help scuttle and dismantle the Mueller investigation.

Not that this move was justified, not in a million years, but there may be more to it than meets the eye.

Sessions could well be a cooperating witness for Mueller. We just don't know.

Still yet, I love the burn that Preet sets alight. He's a national treasure.

I tried to find the discussion points from last night on DU where a number of posters made those points. I was simply resurrecting them, albeit without any substantiation. Mere food for thought.

if Sessions was "slaughtering" McCabe just to get Trump and crowd off his back.

And that sighting being no accident, leads me to believe that Sessions could be above board with respect to the Russia investigation.

The fact that Sessions may have been caught with his pants down and that charges could conceivably be brought against him leads me to believe that this shifting of allegiances may be an indication that he is cooperating with the investigation rather than attempting to undermine it.

This firing of McCabe feels like a punch to the gut, and perhaps Sessions should be demonized for his part in it, but let's face it, he was probably simply Trump's bag man in this case, and an argument could be made that this would not be the battlefield that he would want to face down Trump on.

I despise Sessions with every fiber of my essence, but this may be a case of kill the messenger.
