For Philip Schentrup, whose daughter Carmen was among the students killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., each day brings the same, sharp pain. The same search for answers that don't come.
"To be honest, it's the same day I live over and over," he says. "Since February 14, this is every day. Every day of trying to hold yourself together."

"People constantly say to me, 'I can't imagine what you're going through,'" he says. "Well you should. You should try to comprehend your daughter who you are so proud of, and who was just beginning to live her life being riddled by bullets." - NPR
but a completely honest and appropriate answer to the question presented.

(3,194 posts)All the bloody, bullet riddled bodies are never shown to the public, so the dead are essentially just names on paper. No different than a 90 year old who has a heart attack. Nothing to see here..
The truth is far more disgusting. Perhaps if some of these gun humpers got to see exactly what came of these beautiful kids, 1 or 2 of them might feel different. But we'll never know, because the truth is too terrifying, and the MSM refuses to show it.

(81,440 posts)It sobered up a few people. Not everybody, but a few - who might have not cared that much and assumed it would never happen to them and otherwise would have gone out and behaved like reckless assholes behind the wheel. Kids facing a DUI conviction often have to go to the county morgue to view bodies of victims of drunk drivers. That's some pretty tough love, but sometimes it's needed.

(53,833 posts)It started off innocently in an operating room with a nurse prepping a naked chest for an operation, but instead of it cutting to another scene, a surgeon's hand with a scalpel casually moved into the picture and drew a bead all the way down the chest and sliced open the chest cavity.
Everyone gasped audibly as the doctor exposed a lung blackened from cigarette smoke. Further gasps followed as the cancer-ridden lung was hefted out and removed from the chest cavity.
I've never forgotten that.
Just the shock value of actually seeing the negative results of heavy smoking is still indelibly stamped on my brain so IMO showing the resulting bullet-ridden bodies of these mass shooting would convert many to stricter gun regulation adherents.

But why should we hear about body bags and deaths, and how many, what day it's gonna happen, and how many this or that or what do you suppose? Or, I mean, it's not relevant. So, why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that, and watch him (her husband, former president George H. W. Bush) suffer?

Same as leaders ordering their youth into a war that can't be won, isn't even meant to be won. The politicians don't wan to win the war against their funders.

(3,194 posts)For all the talk of "support the troops," there are many in power who feel that those serving have to do the country's bidding, and if the country is wrong, well...."thoughts & prayers." How much did it matter with all the deaths in Iraq, over non-existent WMD? Many of those responsible for pushing that war are still serving, so obviously those unnecessary deaths did not damage them too much.

(16,987 posts)...both emergency medical teams and police officers, as well as others who deal with the aftermath of a shooting -- coroners, counselors, clergy. Let the entire Congress and entire country hear what it's like for a first responder who has to be the one to pick up an injured child who obviously isn't going to make it or for a priest to be there when they break the news to the parents that their kids aren't coming home again.
Let coroners and funeral home staff describe what it means to deal with the remains of men, women, children who have been shot to death.
And let survivors and families tell the country what it's like to then be harassed by conspiracy-mongers.
As a nation, we need a great big intervention.

(6,241 posts)Their hobby is more important than the lives of children. The dead kids are meant to be sacrifices on the alter of their freedom. The true tragedy is the kids that walk out of school in protest of guns. That's the part that really infuriates them.

(4,834 posts)Show the massacre to rally those that want to see it stop but think they won't succeed. Vietnam on TV in the Sixties ended LBJ's hopes for a second term, ended the draft and eventually got the war to stop. If the media could fly around in Helicopters and take movies on the battlefields, they certainly to could raise some shit with the videos of Cruz mowing down teenagers with his AK-15.
Time to demand the videos. Just like body cams on cops. Get the images out there now!

(4,522 posts)They have a f-ed up fear based survival instinct- they would react with fear and buy MORE guns
Ours is a instinct based on compassion / caring
Of course - *somewhere* in there is some amount of caring. I suspect given enough images of victims, it *would* make a difference. Not the actual attack, but the aftermath of pain and suffering.

(6,241 posts)not doing more to control Cruz than wonder why this person was able to get his hands on a weapon. I mean, the police were there 40+ times. Why was he never charged with a crime?
SoCalMusicLover
(3,194 posts)That is the thing. It's not that the campus cop is completely blameless, it's just that he is not the reason for the problem which was a 19 year old with an AR-15. He perhaps could have risked his life, but there is at least some doubt as to whether him by himself with his handgun, was any match for Cruz. I wonder about the other police that supposedly arrived, and whether they should have coordinated among themselves to go in and confront Cruz. I suppose we'll find out when they arrived in relation to when Cruz had already stopped and started to flee.
What the gun freaks like to do is make it seem the campus cop was where the blame should lie. Because what? If he had done something, only 8 kids would have been killed? That's the whole point, it's the Gun Stupid.
And to blame the police or the FBI is fine, because they screwed up too. But ya know why? Because of the Fucking NRA, and the God Damned Gun Lobby, who would have defended to the end, Cruz's right to keep his gun. They can blame the police all they want, but it's because of the ease with which people can get guns, and the difficulty of removing them once gained, that resulted in him having a AR-15. These hypocrites would have freaked if told that he was being restricted to having just a handgun, merely due to his issues. They'd say, a gun is a gun, give him the AR-15. NO RESTRICTIONS. That is their code.
They are God Damned Revisionists, suddenly thinking the FBI fucked up. When they are the reason no restrictions exist, which might have prevented someone like Cruz being subject to no significant checks. No different from their POS leader, cutting laws preventing those with mental illness from getting weapons, and then Blaming the fact that a mentally ill subject, (Who Is Not Mentally Ill BTW), was able to get his hands on one.
christx30
(6,241 posts)protocols that allowed Cruz to get a gun in the first place. There are some people that throw up red flags all over the place. But they are never charged with anything, so their first crime could be murders, and then it's too late to save anyone.

(61,700 posts)But why? Let's dig deeper and figure out why it's worth hundreds of millions in campaign ads and bribes.
I see two likely reasons. I'm sure there's more:
One, guns are an effective way to get people to the polls and vote Republican.
Two, the NRA is part of a global crime syndicate that is funded by gun sales in the U.S.
azureblue
(2,150 posts)but it comes down to the fact that the killer had a gun, and the NRA is why he had a gun. If they had not been loosening gun laws for decades, he would not have been able to get the AR.
It's like somebody taking a brick from a building foundation, one at a time, until the building collapses. Then the guy who was taking the bricks blames the building owner.

(2,541 posts)People should see the images and have access to reading the reports. Reading the coroners reports from the Las Vegas event changed my mind on an AWB. I thought ammo capacity limits was the better more winnable fight than an outright ban on assault weapons. I was wrong.
I was of the opinion that a gun, is a gun, is a gun...that being shot by a .45 was the same as being shot by a .223 but it is nowhere close to the same, yes I was naive. After reading the reports I understood how much more damage is cause by the higher velocity rounds from .223/5.56 vs a .45/9mm etc.
I think media outlets should show the images, that it would have a big effect on getting legislation passed. The NRA got congress to stop any governmental funding of studies by the CDC on gun violence because just putting numbers to the issue of gun violence would have an effect, so seeing images would have a much greater effect. Just like it did on the Vietnam War.

(10,054 posts)Many centers that present themselves as legal abortion providers are designed for the sole purpose of scaring the women into making so called Christian choices instead. Wouldn't it be something if every prospective gun buyer had to go through the same kind of "counseling" with bloody photo images of dead school children before they could buy a gun?

(51,624 posts)where she could utilize her talents but in a different atmosphere or setting? I was a teacher for over 15 years and all my teacher friends discouraged their own kids from teaching (and this was BEFORE mass shootings). It is getting worse and worse too.

(68,643 posts)kids with rich parents and the other half very very poor. I quit teaching full time and went into business in GA...no unions, terrible schools and they were cheating big time on standardized testing. They ordered me to push 9th graders out of school to improve test schools...I refused. Some who went along with it were convicted and even jailed.
BigmanPigman
(51,624 posts)That must take forever. All those scan-tron bubbles to fill in. My eyes are crossing just thinking of it. It isn't bad enough "teaching to the test"? No one believed me when I told them that I spent 1/2 the school year testing 6 year olds and teaching them how to take standardized tests. And guess who had to transfer all of their answers onto scan-tron sheets and enter them into the computer one at a time? Yep, the teachers who now had to work 60 hour weeks for the same pay, fewer benefits and no COLA for 5 years. Oh joy!

(68,643 posts)This is illegal. And some teachers who showed the tests to student early or taught from them went to jail. I refused...and when the authorities came knocking on my door, I had my grade books and documents. BigmanPigman

I fix computers now...Windows updates keep me in business...when I came to Ohio My sister in law who was disabled was diagnosed with cancer so I couldn't work...she is doing great. and I have enjoyed less structure...subbing and help folks out with computers.

(14,176 posts)Instead they send their thoughts and prayers. Many on the other side think that is enough, because obviously these parents must have displeased God somehow, not been true, and that they themselves or their kids, will never suffer such a fate because they are true believers. But they will send their prayers to these survivors because they are such superior people. And so never have to imagine it happening to their family.

(19,204 posts)If anything like that happened to my daughter I don't think I could keep it together. I'm in tears just thinking about the horror her family is going through. All because a messed up kid had easy access to a weapon of war.
And the big brave men who value their access to military style weapons over the lives of CHILDREN aren't concerned whatsoever.
