My sons school didnt have a walkout today

This is what they did instead:

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Your child’s safety is important to all of us at *****. There are many ways to show support against gun violence and other heinous acts that will not compromise the safety or welfare of our students.

To show support for the families who lost loved ones in the fatal Florida shooting, we have decided to have the following activities on March 14, 2018 in lieu of a student "walk out".

• In the ELA and Social Studies classes, the students will do a Socratic Seminar around the following question: How can we reduce gun violence in America?

• In the Math and Science classes, the students will explore statistics that support gun control and compare the U.S. to other countries. As an activity, they can make bar graphs or circle graphs to show the comparisons.

I think that this was a pretty good alternative. We’re going to march together on the 24th. Our kids did us all proud today.

Counties in the metro Atlanta area were split on this. I was proud of the schools who allowed the students to walk out as part of a planned event for the morning. Made much more sense to me than threatening the students with suspension.

But it’s a middle school so the kids are a bit younger and it’s not in the greatest neighborhood so this feels right for this school. My son brought home a poster that he made!
