To the parents supporting their children walking out, thank you for raising this new generation of leaders.

To the parents who didn’t support their children who walked out anyway, thank you for raising this new generation of leaders.

I'll say, "Thanks, NRA."

Boring explanation of "Thanks, Lon": Back in the late 1980s, a group formed called the Oregon Citizens Alliance (OCA), headed by Lon Mabon, assisted by the odious Scott Lively (who continues to be an evil presence). The OCA first got going to overturn a Multnomah County ordinance banning discrimination against sexual minorities. They won that skirmish, and were emboldened to try further. In 1992, they sponsored Ballot Measure 9, which would have amended the Oregon Constitution to permanently cast glbt people as second class citizens. They lost. Undaunted, they came back in 1994 with Ballot Measure 13, which was worse in some ways. In a Republican wave election year, Measure 13 still lost, but only by 51-49.

The gay community and its allies were slow off the mark, but the 1994 election finally galvanized them into action. Folks began meeting, strategizing, and organizing to beat back the bigots, and to take a less reactive, more progressive program. There were wins and losses along the way, but it turns out that gay people and their allies are a happy political warrior bunch. During Pride week and at various meetings, the greeting "Thanks, Lon" was born as a way of acknowledging that without the naked, unapologetic bigotry of the OCA, a lot of progress might never have happened.

The intransigent opposition of the NRA to any regulation of firearms might just be bearing the same fruit. I certainly hope so.

I love all these kids who have been brutally awakened to a harsh reality that they are now determined to change. God Bless Them ALL! They're doing the work of the saints.
