One student walks out after NJ high school threatens to suspend any protesters

BY AVERY ANAPOL - 03/14/18 11:43 AM EDT

Just one student walked out of New Jersey’s Sayreville War Memorial High School to protest gun violence after the district threatened to suspend students participating in the nationwide walkout.

Sophomore Rosa Rodriquez walked out of the school Wednesday morning, while hundreds of others gathered in the school’s auditorium to mark the occasion, according to New Jersey’s 1010 WINS.

Students nationwide participated in a walkout to mark one month since the Florida school shooting where 17 people were killed and more than a dozen others were injured.

Sayreville Public School District was one of several districts nationwide to threaten students with disciplinary action for participating in protests. District officials said they would issue two-day suspensions to students who participated in the walkout, according to a letter from the New Jersey ACLU.

She and a few friends took the lead in organizing their walk out and the school was extremely supportive and encouraging.

However the school had an electrical fire last week which resulted in it being closed this whole week. So they have been in discussion with doing a separate walkout on a later date (possibly to coincide with the March 24th walk) when the school is open again.
