I remember not long ago, I don't know the news source, but she said there wasn't enough to impeach Trump, or something to that effect. I feel impeachment is the most urgent activity for the House to undertake. Getting him out of that office as quick as possible. Has anyone heard of Rep. Pelosi changing her mind?

That could happen too. Very troubling times.

It is the job of Congress to layout the narrative of what exactly happened. If we ever get rep. Schiff as chair then we will start hearing what all happened.
Only the should impeachment
start, assuming actions occurred that demand impeachment.
We do not want to jump the gun and impeach without the support of the American people.

(1,714 posts)her statement about taking impeachment off the table was prior to the 2006 election, and it was to reassure moderates that the House wasn't going to be tied up for a year or more with a futile effort to do little more than make a point.
As for getting Trump out of office ASAP, it isn't going to happen. Impeachment could happen, if we take the House. Getting him out of office would take a 2/3 vote in the Senate. That is mathematically impossible. Do you understand how many R Senators would have to vote to convict in order to get him out of office? Can you imagine the Rs NOT voting in lockstep to acquit?

(1,714 posts)I thought you were referring to her statement about impeaching Bush. Didn't realize she had made the same statement about Trump. My bad.
Still, however, Trump isn't leaving office before 2020, at the earliest.

(56,828 posts)I was very upset at the time. Even if you don't intend to impeach, you can still use the threat of impeachment to negotiate concessions in legislation.
I think this time, Pelosi & Hoyer (I think) have both said that Democrats should not run on a platform of just impeaching Trump.
That said, if Democrats do win back the House and start holding real hearings with tough questions for Team Trump, you'll see the base and Democrats demanding impeachment hearings start. And, if Don Jr, Eric or Jared really embarrass themselves or they have recordings of Trump coordinating with the Russians, you might even see Republicans joining in with them.

(1,714 posts)that would GOT(R)V more than a threat of impeaching Trump? Every fanatical redneck in the country would crawl over broken glass to protect their 'hero.' There are plenty of districts that we will win because the base is not happy about a lot of stuff--including failure to repeal the ACA, funding of PP, etc., etc., etc. They will probably stay home in November. We would lose those Seats if the extreme RW is highly motivated.

(37,451 posts)majority needed in the Senate will affirm the proceedings. It will take sometime and a lot rides on Mueller's investigation. I think it will still be going on through Nov.

(1,714 posts)against Bush would probably have brought out a lot of R voters who stayed home in 2006, would probably have persuaded a lot of moderates to vote R, and could have lost us a lot of the House seats we won that year. I won't second guess her about that. She's a smart woman, and a great politician. She knew what she was doing.

(765 posts)The problem with impeachment now is that the GOP made it an utterly partisan process when they impeached Bill Clinton. IMO, for it to have any credibility it HAS to come from the party of the politician in question. If it comes from the opposition, it will never be taken seriously.
The GOP has shown no inclination to be a co-equal branch of government with Trump, and while I want him gone as much as anyone, I don't believe impeachment is an option if there is no support for it among the GOP members of congress.
