(40,212 posts)He is soft spoken, low key, and has a Mayberry RFD Aww Shucks personality. I think his demeanor and his centrist politics are the reason he won. It should be a lesson to democrats of the need to broaden the spectrum of candidates that the party runs. A different kind of democrat, a left leaning democrat, would have lost this race.

(10,611 posts)When a candidate is in deep-red, double-digit Trump territory, the reality is they'll need to move some of those voters away from their normal voting pattern.
The candidate has to move them in increments.
That's why Lamb campaigns with Joe Biden, but not Barack Obama. YET.
Some of those Trump voters can cross over to folksy, of-their-generation (and yes, WHITE) Joe Biden, but are not yet ready to relinquish their programmed resentment/fear/racial hatred of Joe's former boss.
But it takes the ability to recognize the reality of where the candidate is trying to run to adopt the correct strategy.

(58,785 posts)I've always been a strong liberal, left of a good 80% of the country on most issues. But I'm committed to democratic government, and that requires accepting that representatives must represent their constituents as best they can manage in a complex world. Or it's not democracy.

(29,672 posts)candidates HAVE to fit their districts......and they'll be different all over the country. Dah....... makes sense, so why is it so hard to get the right candidates??
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)a sensible one worth repeating. A lot. The media usually dramatize divisions instead of how to achieve the unity democracy must have, and they'll be right back at it.
Democratic districts don't have it "so hard" to get good candidates, though of course one doesn't always step up. The problem is that too many people like to assume they have bad candidates. Facile cynicism makes them feel smart without having to put themselves out by actually, you know, reading a bio or checking a voting record.
Republican districts of course a lot trickier to field a good Democrat. He or she has to be a good enough leader to both respect diverse political views and be able to convince a majority that somewhat left is good governance on at least some issues. Not a job for just anyone.

(129,087 posts)Looks like the new district will be PA-14 if this map holds. He will have to file and run in it for the May primary.

(13,225 posts)He currently lives in what will be the new District PA-17. Rep. Keith Rothfus (R) lives in that district (currently PA-12).
Additionally, Saccone lives in what will become PA-18. Rep. Mike Doyle (D) lives in what will be PA-18. There is speculation that Saccone may run in the new PA-14 even though he does live there.
I have not heard anyone definitively declaring their intentions for the 2018 midterms. I think many people were waiting to see the outcome of the special election, plus the Republicans are still holding out hope to overturn the redistricting map at the Supreme Court level.
You also have to wonder if the Republican party and the right wing PACs would be willing to sink millions again in a campaign for Rick Saccone.

(56,828 posts)Otherwise, I think Lamb will run in one new district that should be more balanced, while Saccone (possibly) would run in another. I think one is 14 and the other is 17, but not sure which is which.
