APNewsBreak: Green Party candidate was on state GOP payroll
By MATT VOLZ

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — A man who registered as a Green Party candidate for Montana's U.S. Senate race was on the state Republican Party's payroll and heads a newly formed anti-tax group, according to a review of election documents.

Timothy Adams filed as a challenger Monday against Democratic Sen. Jon Tester, who faces a tough re-election campaign, in a race where a Green Party candidate could siphon votes from the Democrat.

The Green Party qualified as a political party in Montana on Monday, which was also the state's deadline for candidates to file for office. Green Party officials blasted an email that morning to solicit candidates who could register by the day's end.

<snip>

Adams' name and phone number is the same as the treasurer of Montanans Against Higher Taxes, a group formed to oppose a legislative referendum on the ballot this fall for a 10-year property tax extension for the state's university system.

They ignore their own rhetoric (wise move) and know perfectly well that if elections were held fairly without dirty tricks or money, with the message they are currently offering, they lose. They lose badly. It won't help them screaming that it was God's will (translation: their will) that they govern, if the voters' will says otherwise.

If they cheat to win, and get away with it, that's another story entirely. Who the hell is Jill Stein and where does she get the money to mount a national campaign serious enough to deny Hillary the numbers to take the White House? How do enough lies about Hillary get broadcast and printed around the country to make her "loss" seem to be her own fault? Who finances that dissemination? Why is it that voter suppression movements are instigated exclusively by Republicans, and directed exclusively at voting groups who tend to vote Democratic?

Their nuts and bolts people know what the score is, and how much they need to cheat to beat it.

Lately I've given a little thought to who was helping the P.U.M.A. movement in 2008. That manifestation was small potatoes compared to the social media etc.misinformation and disruption tactics employed in 2016, but it may have been a precursor. If Putin etc. had been up to speed to go full in on manipulating passions left over from the Obama/Clinton campaign, things could have gotten a whole lot uglier faster. I give real credit to Hillary for her work to counter that, but some of it went on anyway and it would have grown farther anyway had more forces been throwing gasoline onto that fire. I was traveling in some online circles at the time where PUMA thinking nonetheless did take root, and I lost a lot of important online relationships because of my refusal to have any part in that thinking.

That was one of my most intensive work days, getting up at 6 in the morning and finishing around 11 PM, probably didn't get to bed before 1 AM (I am getting too old for this shit). Few Catalans are up at 6 if they don't have to be, but few are in bed before midnight, either, and my work day spanned it all, since I was on their turf. I'm the only one in my organization who speaks Catalan, so it's not like I could have called in the cavalry to come to my relief, either. Obviously, they all speak and understand Spanish as well, but if they're at home, they definitely prefer to speak their own language. If they have to deal with an American, they will turn first to the one that they know speaks it.

Anyway, suffice it to say that I probably missed most posts on that day, and would not have missed yours under normal circumstances--to the extent that I have any normal circumstances to begin with.

I don't think we've ever hired anyone based on their fluency in Catalan. With me, it was perk that came with the package. I learned Catalan while living in Barcelona in the late sixties, before I had even learned my first words of German.

I don't think it would be wise on my part to request a raise at this point. The obvious retort would be "what makes YOU so special (other than speaking Catalan)?" And I would be hard-put to come up with an answer. Being able to order xuxos in the original is not high on their list of indispensable assets.

The Greens in Germany were the first environmentalist-progressive party to gain enough credibility (after shedding their East German-financed "Fundalos," or fundamentalists) to become a credible movement and then a credible political party that has been in national coalitions and even held the foreign ministry (Joschka Fischer, who did a good job). They were (and still are) taken quite seriously in Germany, and the name is now a mainstay here.

On the other hand, the name "Republican" is the kiss of death in Western Europe. It was first used in recent times when a former SS officer tried to start a neo-Nazi party here in Germany in the 1980s. The Nazi ("National" in German is pronounced Nah-tsee-oh-NAHL, hence the abbreviation, NAH-tsee) party is and was forbidden here, so he looked around for a party with similar views, whose name he could use. With Reagan's Republicans, he found his inspiration, hence "Die Republikaner." The Republicans under Reagan didn't appreciate being the inspiration for a group of German neo-Nazis being led by a former SS officer, but they couldn't do much more than keep quiet about it. The German Republikaner are all but defunct now, though their current bourgeois soulmates, the AfD, are worrying.

Sarkozy thought he'd unite the French center-right with a brand that had some success in the USA. Ignoring the failed German version, he renamed his movement "Les Républicains," just in time for Trump to emerge. oops. Pas très sage (not very smart), Monsieur Sarko. You should have tried "Les Démocrates." Trop tard (too late).

Florida’s flawed “voter-cleansing” program – Salon.com’s politics story of the year

Monday, December 4, 2000

If Vice President Al Gore is wondering where his Florida votes went, rather than sift through a pile of chad, he might want to look at a "scrub list" of 173,000 names targeted to be knocked off the Florida voter registry by a division of the office of Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris. A close examination suggests thousands of voters may have lost their right to vote based on a flaw-ridden list that included purported "felons" provided by a private firm with tight Republican ties.

Early in the year, the company, ChoicePoint, gave Florida officials a list with the names of 8,000 ex-felons to "scrub" from their list of voters.

But it turns out none on the list were guilty of felonies, only misdemeanors. The company acknowledged the error, and blamed it on the original source of the list -- the state of Texas.

Florida officials moved to put those falsely accused by Texas back on voter rolls before the election. Nevertheless, the large number of errors uncovered in individual counties suggests that thousands of eligible voters may have been turned away at the polls.

One Million Black Votes Didn’t Count in The 2000 Presidential Election…

...It’s Not Too Hard To Get Your Vote Lost -- If Some Politicians Want it To Be Lost

by Greg Palast
In the 2000 presidential election, 1.9 million Americans cast ballots that no one counted. "Spoiled votes" is the technical term. The pile of ballots left to rot has a distinctly dark hue: About 1 million of them -- half of the rejected ballots -- were cast by African Americans although black voters make up only 12 percent of the electorate.
SNIP
While investigating the 2000 ballot count in Florida for BBC Television, I saw firsthand how the spoilage game was played -- with black voters the predetermined losers.

Florida's Gadsden County has the highest percentage of black voters in the state -- and the highest spoilage rate. One in 8 votes cast there in 2000 was never counted. Many voters wrote in "Al Gore." Optical reading machines rejected these because "Al" is a "stray mark."

By contrast, in neighboring Tallahassee, the capital, vote spoilage was nearly zip; every vote counted. The difference? In Tallahassee's white- majority county, voters placed their ballots directly into optical scanners. If they added a stray mark, they received another ballot with instructions to correct it.

In other words, in the white county, make a mistake and get another ballot; in the black county, make a mistake, your ballot is tossed.

The U.S. Civil Rights Commission looked into the smelly pile of spoiled ballots and concluded that, of the 179,855 ballots invalidated by Florida officials, 53 percent were cast by black voters. In Florida, a black citizen was 10 times as likely to have a vote rejected as a white voter.

Sequoia Voting Systems Responsible for 2000 Presidential Debacle?

Author: Kim Zetter 08.15.07

SNIP Now new questions are being raised about who was responsible for the faulty punch cards in that election. And according to last night's Dan Rather Reports episode, the fingers point to Sequoia Voting Systems, which not only makes e-voting machines that replaced punch cards but also created the punch cards that failed in Florida.

Rather and his producers spoke with several former workers of Sequoia who revealed that in 2000 the company changed the paper stock it used for punch cards to paper made by Boise Cascade and that they knew before the election that the punch cards that Sequoia was producing would cause problems. In fact, pre-election testing by Sequoia showed that the cards were not punching cleanly and that dangling chads were going to be a likely problem in the election. The original transcript from the Rather program is difficult to read because it lacks punctuation and paragraph breaks, but I've added paragraph breaks here so you can understand more clearly what the workers told Rather. You can also watch the entire Dan Rather report, The Trouble with Touch Screens SNIP

Its a sneaky trick by Republicans to try and win a Green primary in order to run. I suspect once he is vetted and outed, he won't get many votes to be their candidate, as he is diametrically opposed to the Green party platform.

but you knew that,
or maybe you just had a knee jerk reaction and filled in your own blanks to suit your own narrative.

So a party who have "10 key points, which include ending war, halting dependence on fossil fuels and advocating for social justice" is "slime"? Please list any other points of their platform that you disapprove of to show they are nothing but 'slime'. Either you support those ideals or you do not. If you hear someone standing beside you in a rally for women's rights, or against a war, or for any other social justice cause, and you overhear them admit they voted Green, are they instantly 'slime'?

I don't get why some can't see the Greens as a force to usurp, them being in contention for votes on the left rather than paint them an evil Putin loving Republican dirty trick. It does no good for your own credibility when you exaggerate a threat to such ridiculous levels. The Libertarian party is mostly a contender on right for Republicans. The Libertarians received 3x the votes of what the Greens got, yet I don't hear half the vitriol aimed at them from Republican voters that I hear on here by self-described progressives against the Greens.

If the Republicans came out hard against the anti-government, anti-tax Libertarians and invented an easily reputed CT against them, saying they are secretly working for George Soros, or the Clinton Foundation. Maybe they found a Democrat that was registering as a Lib to try and get on their ballot (for instance), and so declared the whole Libertarian party a sham full of slimeballs....well that would probably just piss off a lot of traditional Libertarians who, once they discovered it was all smears, would only harden their support for the L Party and maybe even help recruit more.

Republicans know how to deal with their third party contention. Ignore them while stealing enough of their platform to make sure they never become a real threat. Blabbing on and on about how they are such an insidious evil threat full of duplicitous candidates who are secretly working for Trump only raises their profile, if only that it will spark a pushback.

Since this Green Party connection seems to be a pattern, in Adams' case and Jill Stein's anyway, I wish someone would come up with a catchy little ear worm of a song that tells the story of this guy and of Stein in a way that sticks and can quickly be used in all kinds of campaigns where it's tight and they've got a Green running.

The refrain could be phrased as questions - less likely to be shut down by legal action as libelous. (Wish I had talent in this area. My husband does but this isn't the kind of songwriting that he'd enjoy.)

And then pursuing the illegality would underline the truth of the message about Adams and by extension makes the other connections credible.

Video version could show Jill and Putin, documentation for Adams' GOP connection.
