Longtime diplomat: Tillerson's public firing makes my head explodeUnprecedented decision: If you needed further evidence that the Trump administration is the most idiosyncratic of any in the modern period, this decision should remove all doubt. The firing of a secretary of state on social media is both humiliating and without precedent. Two have resigned over principle -- William Jennings Bryan over Woodrow Wilson's policies toward the war in Europe and Cyrus Vance over Jimmy Carter's failed rescue mission of the Iranian hostages. And one, Alexander Haig, left because of rivalries within the Reagan administration. But none, since 1945, has been fired. And this is all the stranger given Tillerson's desire to stay.

(115,740 posts)When you're the boss sometimes you have to fire people - not like a fake reality show where it's all scripted by the producers and you're just pretending. So, what you do, whether you're the manager of a convenience store or the president of the United States, is this: You call the employee into your office, tell them to have a seat (they might suspect what's coming at this point), and then you say something like, "I'm really sorry, Rex, but this just isn't working out and I'm afraid we're going to have to let you go." And you tactfully explain what the reasons are: "I don't think we were always reading from the same page, and I need someone who'll clearly represent our positions." Then you tell them when they'll need to leave, thank them for their service, shake their hand and see them out. In other words, you behave like a civilized human being who isn't afraid to do difficult things that might make someone angry.
Trump is such a spineless poltroon that he can't even face the person he's firing. Yes, it's true that Tillerson pretty much sucked as SoS, but he still deserved to be treated with some minimum level of courtesy.

But, no.......
