nor sadly has it been the last, but the wave of grief and revulsion drove far-reaching gun control measures that seem to have worked so far (in a very different culture to that of the United States where guns weren't as prevalent anyway). Other weaponry can be used, of course, but stiff penalties for those involved in crimes using guns, or even the threat of them (just one of the resulting measures), do seem to act as a deterrent.

There are unanswered questions about Thomas Hamilton (not least his links to high-ups in power at the time), but that shouldn't detract from the power of this heartfelt message.
