Trump wanted someone more malleable.

... on here. Tillerson was the perfect SoS for purposes of dismantling the department. He is a Putin fan, and a friend of the oligarchs and business interests overseas. (Think Exxon, e.g.) I think something we don’t know yet is bubbling around beneath his firing.

Trump is veering strongly to his far-right supporters, who have seemed to won him over at this point. Tillerson is too moderate and conventional.
