(65 posts)Just Russia being Russia. It is their mindset they wanted the guy dead and where he was at was irrelevant. If he was in the US they would have done it here as well.

(65 posts)I remember in the early 80's in Lebanon a Russian diplomat was killed by extremists.
The Russians not only tracked down and killed everybody responsible the also killed their wives, children, brothers, sisters, mother's, father's, grandparents and anyone else that was around them at the time.
They did this as a warning to others and it worked no Russian diplomat has been harmed since.
The Russians play by their own rules and do not care about world opinion. They only care about settling a score. If you fuck them over they will hunt y pu down and kill you.
What country you are in is irellivant and as in this case they left a calling card so everybody knows it was them as a warning to others not to fuck with them.
Most westerners have no idea how fucking cold blooded the Russians are. What they did in Lebanon was horrific but that is how they operate and it works.

(35,320 posts)When they killed Trotsky?
Do they hablan espanol in Moscu these days? No?
In which case they must govorit' po-russki not only in Meksiko, but in all of Meksika by now. (Meksiko is Mexico City, Meksika is Mexico.)
I guess the war didn't go so well. For either side. They still speak Russian in Moscow and Spanish in the good ol' DF.
Killing a Russian outside of Russia isn't much of an act of war. Never has been. More than one American's been killed by a foreign diplomat or person covered by diplomatic immunity, and we didn't launch as war as a result.
Similarly, taxing an American living in Austria is not a repeat of the Anschluss.
In a sense, both are territorial violations. In another sense, not so much.

(100,081 posts)Same with all of his lackies and cronies - Duterte, Erdogan, and so on. Putin is causing chaos around the world and he needs to be dealt with. Unfortunately by the time we do, it may be too late.

(65 posts)But Russia is a nuclear power. If we tried to deal with him like Saddam we would all be dead or wish we were.
When a country has nuclear weapons it changes the equation. In Russia's case they have enough nukes to destroy the world several times over.
So to be blunt we are limited in what we can do to them as they are limited on what they can do to us.

(100,081 posts)That is something that would not be easy to do, but it would be possible if Putin threatened enough countries. Sanctions just aren't enough, he will find some way around them. We need a far more serious way of punishing them.

(65 posts)Other than war sanctions are the only way and Russia is rich in natural resources and energy. The energy they supply to Europe and I do not think Europe wants them to cut off their pipeline.
Like I said Russia can incinerate the world several times over as we can. Their is only so much you can do to a nuclear superpower.
I understand the need to put that little bastard in check but the question how far can we go and not start Armageddon?
