Is This Anti-Pelosi, Pro-Gun Pennsylvania Democrat Showing His Party The Way To Win Back Trump Voters?

If Conor Lamb wins his Pennsylvania special election on Tuesday, his campaign could be a blueprint for Democrats around the country trying to win in conservative districts.

.....................
In this union-heavy, blue-collar district just outside of Pittsburgh where Trump won by 19 points, Lamb is running as a Republicans Democrat. And some in his party hope his campaign will prove a blueprint for how Democrats can win back the working-class voters who deserted them in 2016.
Lamb opposes any kind of assault weapon ban, a stance he reiterated in the aftermath of last months Parkland school shooting. In one of his campaign ads, he aims an AR-15. He says he is personally pro-life, though he would oppose 20-week abortion ban legislation. He supports Trumps tariffs. He will not back Nancy Pelosi for House Democratic leader.................................
................
I think youre really starting to see how that can be a message that keeps us very competitive in some red seats, said Rep. Tim Ryan, pointing to Lambs focus on bread and butter economic issues as opposed to the usual political flashpoints. Ryan, an Ohio Democrat who unsuccessfully challenged Pelosi as leader, has spent the aftermath of 2016 on a soapbox talking about what Democrats need to do to win back the white, working-class voters that make up a large portion of this district. He campaigned with Lamb Thursday.
In the fight for control of the House of Representatives, Tuesdays special election is meaningless. The winner of the $12 million contest will serve for just nine months. A recent court ruling on Pennsylvania redistricting, which for the moment remains in legal limbo, dissolved the district, splitting it into two newly configured districts. When a new Congress convenes in 2019, the district will likely no longer exist.

(149,739 posts)as well as good for the country.
I don't much like some of his positions, but he's enough of a Democrat for me. If I lived there, I sure as hell would vote for him.
Remember: There is no such thing as the perfect candidate.

(and, we probably will)

(13,133 posts)Trying to stay in the middle while going along with the establishment often doesn't work for long. Mostly people seeking worldly access try to work this way. Eventually, money interests get the best of them. If you didn't want to identify with a group then why do you hang around with them is such a simple question.
I guess well see if he wins. Eventually you have to take a stand for something that aligns with Dems if youre a dem.

(5,164 posts)I hope he wins. But from what Ive seen he is anti a lot of typical Dem positions so Im wondering what does he support. I guess he may change his mind on some things if he is elected.

...............Lamb never mentioned the president by name in our conversation. When I asked what he thought of Trump, the Democrat sat up taller and sounded slightlyalmost imperceptiblyagitated: We need the office of the presidency to succeed if were gonna make any progress on these issues, Lamb said firmly. The number-one thing people talk about is wanting to get someone down there whos actually gonna attack the problem, not attack the other side.
Lamb calls himself a Western Pennsylvania Democrat, which seems to him to mean focusing on things like labor issues, the opioid crisis, and the need to protect entitlements such as Medicare and Social Security. Lambs emphasis on these particular items is an effort to endear him to the same voters who supported Trumpperhaps the same people Trump referred to in his 2016 victory speech as the forgotten men and women of America.
The congressional district has more than 87,000 union members, and Lamb is leaning heavily into labor issues. Trump did well with labors rank-and-file, producing a 13-point swing in his favor compared with Romney four years earlier. Lamb has been endorsed by most labor unions in the area, and on Tuesday he attended a march through downtown Pittsburgh as the U.S. Supreme Court was hearing a case that could deal a serious blow to organized labor. Saccone, meanwhile, has taken the opposite tack, endorsing right-to-work legislation and declining to meet with labor leaders.
The other issue on which Lamb appears laser-focused is the opioid crisis. More than 4,600 fatal overdoses occurred in Pennsylvania in 2016. The former federal prosecutor said his years spent working on heroin cases inspired him to run for office in the first place. Hes pushing for longer and more-affordable treatment programs. Its not easy, and its not cheap, Lamb told me, but we should expect enough from our government that they should be able to get that done.
Lamb has taken relatively conservative positions on a few key issues. After the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, Florida, Lamb reiterated his stance that the best way to prevent mass shootings is to strengthen background checks and make mental-health treatment more accessible, rather than banning a particular kind of firearm. He also supports fracking, and believes that life begins at conception, although on Monday, the Democrat said he doesnt support proposals to ban abortion after 20 weeks...........

(6,377 posts)Would you rather have a Democrat who votes Democrat 75 percent of the time, or a Republican who votes Republican 100 percent of the time?
The choice is easy.
