Asian countries have always had high tariffs to make sure their jobs stay there. Try and sell a U.S. made car in Japan and see how far you get.

(26,602 posts)protected and for how long, and the 'collegiality' with which the protection is implemented, vis a vis other nations.
But I really really doubt that it would ever make sense for a country like ours to be too protective of extractive or raw material industries, given all of our other options for economic growth...
