His corner of Pennsylvania coal country was an ocean of Trump signs in 2016, Democratic activist Ben Bright said.
Today, all across the staunchly Republican area, there are Democratic yard signs backing Conor Lamb, a young ex-marine who is fighting for a seat in Congress.
The special election in Pennsylvanias 18th district has become an important test of Donald Trumps political potency. He won overwhelmingly here in 2016, in a district that includes Republican-leaning Pittsburgh suburbs and vast swaths of coal country that were ancestrally Democratic.
When he ran, Republican congressman Tim Murphy faced only token opposition. However, in October 2017 Murphy was forced to step down after it was revealed that he urged a woman with whom he was conducting an extramarital affair to have an abortion.

(3,245 posts)I'm only able to read most about what Conor Lamb is like,
but, my opinion, from what I've heard and read, he seems like he'll be what may be deemed "new" Democrat. By that I mean, a big part of his candidacy has been that he has said he will not just follow Nancy Pelosi and may not support her for Speaker is the House switches.
It just might be possible, that these younger candidates may be looking for a new direction.
I do hope he wins. I have friends in his district who are very much behind him.

If a Democrat can win in this heavy Repub district, there may indeed be a 'Blue Wave' a comin'.
