Dicks, Major Gun Retailer, Will Stop Selling Assault-Style Rifles
One of the nations largest sports retailers, Dicks Sporting Goods, said Wednesday morning it was immediately ending sales of all assault-style rifles in its stores.
The retailer also said that it would no longer sell high-capacity magazines and that it would not sell any gun to anyone under 21 years of age, regardless of local laws.
The announcement, made two weeks after the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., that killed 17 students and staff members, is one of the strongest stances taken by corporate America in the national gun debate. It also carries symbolic weight, coming from a prominent national gunseller.

(9,426 posts)Expected an article about Ryan, McConnell and the rest of the gang of traitors. Good for Dicks. Nobody needs an assault rifle to hunt, unless they are hunting humans. In a SANE country, these weapons would never have been available to anyone who wants one.

(6,556 posts)I sent them a thank you supporting their moral decision to take steps for common sense gun sales. They took the best of the ideas and acted on them; taking assault type rifles and high capacity magazines off their sales floor, as well as their decision to not sell guns to anyone under the age of 21 years of age. Hopefully more stores selling assault weapons and high capacity magazines will do the same. It's nice to see sanity in action. Kudos to Dick's Sporting Goods for leading the way to sanity.

(13,855 posts)This is not the first time Dicks has made changes in response to a school massacre. In 2012, after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that killed 26 people, Dicks removed assault-style rifles from its main retail stores. But a few months later, the company began carrying the firearms at its outdoor and hunting retail chain, Field & Stream.
This time, Mr. Stack said, the changes will be permanent.

Also
Beginning today, DICK'S Sporting Goods is committed to the following:
We will no longer sell assault-style rifles, also referred to as modern sporting rifles. We had already removed them from all DICK'S stores after the Sandy Hook massacre, but we will now remove them from sale at all 35 Field & Stream stores.
We will no longer sell firearms to anyone under 21 years of age.
We will no longer sell high capacity magazines.

(11,574 posts)We can all take action to let businesses know that we support them, whether with a phone call, a letter of support to an executive or a personal thank you to a store manager. The more vocal we are, the more businesses will take a stand for safety and decency.

(1,714 posts)and I'm all for it, BUT--I'm wondering if their decisions to withhold firearms from anyone 18--21 will hold up. I'm guessing it won't . . . Discrimination, and all.
When the legal drinking age was 18, if a liquor store or a bar tried not selling alcohol to the under-21 crowd, they'd have been hauled into court. Why is this different? Should it be?

(22,040 posts)Good for Dick's. Stop selling the guns and the magazines. That's the free market in action, right?
What about the ammunition? Are the bullets for an assault rifle transferable to other weapons? Can Dick's stop selling them, too? After all, there are a lot of those guns out in the world, I'm sure.
Thanks, in advance.

(18,733 posts)That shoot the .223 Remington round( the military calls it 5.56 mm). They come in single shot, bolt action, pump-action and semi-auto.
Despite the urban myth there is nothing different about this ammunition versus any other. It is not designed to Tumble, it will not turn an animal into hamburger, it will not take a deer's head off nor will it vaporize a nearly 300-pound hog.
They could choose to stop selling it but given its widespread popularity I believe that is unlikely.

(22,040 posts)So my neighbors who have AR-15s and other high powered weapons will still be able to buy their ammo at Dick's.
This is part of the reason I'm agnostic/apathetic about guns: There are so many of them in the U.S. that it seems unlikely that the genie could ever be put back in the bottle. Another reason is that just because I'm not into guns doesn't mean that others can't practice a sport safely and responsibly.
