By Allegra Kirkland | February 26, 2018 4:13 pm
Imagine if every school campus in the United States had its own volunteer security officer: a former police officer or military veteran equipped with an assault rifle. Thats the dream of Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes.
In the wake of the February 14 massacre at a Parkland, Florida high school, Rhodes is calling on members of his far-right anti-government militia group to serve as unpaid and unaccountable armed school guards whether teachers and students like the idea or not.
One Indiana Oath Keeper has already deployed to a local school, even though the school district says theres no need for him to be there.
Rhodes wants the military and police veterans who make up Oath Keepers membership to volunteer for unpaid, rotating shifts at schools of all levels, and colleges, throughout the country. He and two other representatives of the fringe militia community will hold a webinar Monday night where they plan to encourage Oath Keepers to station themselves at schools to protect the children against mass murder, and to help train the teachers and staff.

(13,081 posts)We have a religious nut job that sets up a microphone and speaker across the street and scream about all the different ways theyre going to hell. At this point, even the religious kids that agree with him think hes a giant asshole, and theyre not afraid to let him know.
And Oathkeepers? They couldnt hold their composure for ten minutes around my high school kids.

They could be called the "Deputies " or something like that.
How do you think that would work?

(12,660 posts)As someone in another thread said, the kids bringing weapons into a school to "deal" with those they think have persecuted them, or didn't recognize their greatness will just go to the malls or other places kids gather to get even and gain that sense of ultimate power over their environment that they crave if they don't think they can take on easy targets.
It's not adults that go into the schools shooting. It's other children, whether the people bringing the guns in are physically teenagers or in their early 20's.
They're still emotionally children living in fantasy worlds.
Sort of like the Oafkeepers themselves.
These school shooters are dangerous children that American society ignores because too many adults want to live in a good, small town Pleasantville existence where everyone knew their places, and these young men (and girls) are always able to function within the lower range of the acceptable "normal teenage angst" stereotype.
They aren't really monsters in their communities - until they pick up that easily accessible firearm and go hunting human beings.

(12,586 posts)That seems to fit in with the Oath Keepers' state of mind.
Like most hard-line conservatives, they say their only vow is to "protect the Constitution" -- as they interpret it, of course. I imagine there are damned few who have even read the document, much less understand its history and purpose.
I could be wrong. Maybe the only way to stop a crazy guy with an AR-15 is another crazy guy with an AR-15.

(58,670 posts)or at least it sounds the same. Guy claimed to be a military vet who's willing to stand guard over a school. All they have to do is ask.
I guess they want the plan to be mandatory, no permission necessary.

(146,317 posts)gang call 911 every day those gun-fetishists are near the school. "Man with a gun" reports coming in every morning to 911 in large numbers. The cops will get tired of it, and there's nothing they can do to stop the calls. They'll kick the assholes out of the area soon enough.
However, the Oafkeepers aren't likely to stick around very long. They just want to get their photo taken so they can post in on their Facebook Page. Then, they'll go a way. Standing guard on a school is really boring, tedious work, so they'll head on home.
Buncha morons!
