was an American activist and a key member in the Berkeley Free Speech Movement. He is most famous for his passionate speeches, especially the "put your bodies upon the gears" address given at Sproul Hall, University of California, Berkeley on December 2, 1964.

"There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part! You can't even passively take part! And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels…upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop! And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all! "

My dad was on sabbatical at Berkeley that year, and was in the square that day. He was so excited and impressed, and wrote us all about it. When I went down for a conference in 2011 I made a point of visiting the square myself. A proud moment in American history.

Announced the same thing today.
I imagine there will be some BS blowback from the usual RW legislators tomorrow.
