It may be that the algorithm searches the whole site. There are certainly posts on DU about the Confederate battle flag, and such algorithms tend to be literal-minded, paying no attention to context.

The ads are served automatically, without pre-screening by DU.

If an ad is offensive, or not appropriate for DU, the admins can have it blocked. But just complaining about it in GD won't get it blocked - either email it to the admins, or report it in ATA.
