Added to that statistic is the fact that Trump is so bad Bush's approval numbers are now up.

(52,253 posts)it will be interesting to see donnie's popularity after he's been indicted, kicked out of office (one way or another), tried, and convicted of many serious crimes.
the republican party line at that point might well be that they need to reinvent themselves and therefore distance themselves from donnie. they're not likely to canonize him like they did saint ronnie.
his popularity at that point could well go down to 15%.

(1,714 posts)At one point GWB had over 90% approval. GHWB also had high approvals following Gulf War I.

(6,377 posts)Several years of being in a war that became hugely unpopular, and the bottom falling out of the economy.
Right now, the United States isn't in any real wartime conflicts (Afghanistan, I guess, but we've been there forever) and the economy is humming along. The fact that Trump's approval is still so low despite everything possible going right is astounding.

(52,253 posts)between extreme gerrymandering and the balkanization of the media, politics has gotten far more partisan.
republicans under shrub (cheney particularly) were quite contemptuous of democrats, but shrub generally pretended to put want bipartisanship and at least on the surface, showed occassional respect for democrats and left-leaning independents.
not donnie.
donnie has consistently been all-in for the right wing and for the republican party, and has consistently demonstrated complete contempt for democrats and the left.
if you're on the right, this makes him look like your hero and makes you feel like your views, which up until recently were rightly shamed in public, finally seem completely validated and legitimate. of course he's got intense support among a minority of the population.
then foxnews comes along and turns loyalty to donnie into loyalty to the party and to america and to all things holy. it's a matter of identity. they don't let their viewers be upstanding republicans yet disagree with donnie. if donnie says there are five lights when your eyes tell you there are only four, then you better say there are five lights or else you're an un-american terrorist.

(10,437 posts)to be president if they would lead them to the promise land. I do think trump could get down to near 30% as the economy unwinds and trumps trade policies ramp up inflation and cost of good to american consumer AND LOSS JOBS to american workers. Its all starting to happen now. The dynamics of the stock market can be a precursor to worse to come

(1,009 posts)that 16% that strongly approve are just evil, and the rest have their heads in their asses because their 401k just got a big boost. Yep, I know people who only care about that.
