That's what V. Presidents and Lt. Governors are for. To take over in case something happens to the head man.

(654 posts)the Clinton presidency this was a matter debated between many substantial legal minds.
It was interesting to note that there were professors of law on each side the equation. Some who suggested there was no immunity from indictment and others who read Article 3 to infer impeachment as the sole remedy which could then be followed by indictment of the impeached and removed(by the senate trial) president.
A few of the professors quoted during the Clinton years also suggested such immunity applied to any Federal official where impeachment was required to dismiss them from their office and duties.
In what will no doubt be a piece of delicious irony Trump's lawyers will probably find themselves arguing the exact same points as Bill Clintons lawyers did some twenty years ago.
