No Longer a Conservative

https://politicalwire.com/2018/02/25/no-longer-conservative/

"SNIP.........

Max Boot: “In the past I would have been indignant at such attacks and eager to assert my conservative credentials. I spent years writing for conservative publications such as the Wall Street Journal editorial page and Commentary magazine and working as a foreign policy adviser for three Republican presidential campaigns. Being conservative used to be central to my identity. But now, frankly, I don’t give a damn. I prefer to think of myself as a classical liberal, because ‘conservative’ has become practically synonymous with ‘Trump lackey.'”

“If this is what mainstream conservatism has become — and it is — count me out.”

Would be good if Dems, libs, and other rational people recognize it's good of him and others, necessary, and to be applauded.

Perhaps he has had an awakening and is reconsidering his view of the world. It might just be he has seen the damage that Boss Twitt is doing to his "brand". His history and age suggest that this tiger hasn't changed his stripes but is just reading the winds of change to assure he has an income stream in the changes to come.
In the same logic that prevents me from trying to pet an obviously rabid dog I won't accept the contrition of an avowed cold warrior imperialist on its face.

Or Flake, or Corker...

...Max Boot will easily slip back into his comfortable old conservative shoes.

Nevertheless, the enemy of my enemy is my co-non-enemy.

True conservatism, while not consistent with my beliefs, has an elegant logic to it. It has firm moral footing to it with reasoned principles for dealing with both the rich and poor, advantaged and disadvantaged. Todays "conservatives," and the republican clothes they wear, have almost nothing in common with conservative principles. They, quite frankly, have a lot more in common with 1920's oligarchs and present day russian criminal oligarchy.

Please don't take this as an endorsement of classic conservatism. It actually is possible to have an intellectual debate about its merits vs liberalism/progressivism. What the republicans have endorsed today is nothing short of a money grab and fuck everyone else.

... fueled by the hateful, resentful rhetoric of Limbaugh and an army of clones. Reactionaries are the perfect target for demagogues like Limbaugh and Trump.

Lots of disgruntled, overweight, white males found a kinsman in Rush Limpballs. He was overweight, middle aged, had an attractive wife, knew everything (he said), and started telling them that all these others were the causes of their problems (following the pattern of Nazi propaganda). He was shock radio with a hate bent, and for a specific purpose.

Jeb Bush skirted around the bush (pun intended) about something similar.

Doesn't make them Democrats, but at least they aren't joining the wackos of their "new" party.
