Into the belly of the beast...kind of.

Vacation is set. Very unusual, but it's being worked around a business conference for my wife. Spending five days in San Antonio. I guess I won't wear my Obama t-shirt. Would love to hear some tips from DU Texans or others who've been there.

I'm actually doing nothing for the week. I'm just tagging along. So we'll hit Austin toward's the end of the trip. It all looks super-touristy, but who cares. We'll be just as much of a tourist as the next guys.

you are in a given place for a very short time - are you going to be too cool to enjoy it? - hell no

It's not my town, they'll never see me again. I intend to fully immerse myself in it. Well, almost. No black socks with flip-flops and Bermuda shorts.

The Aztec Theatre has good shows and is a neat building to check out.

you will have a good time

I did a fair amount of work there and always had a great time... River Walk of course...

I recommend staying in the North end if possible

Alamo is OK for history but a disappointment

Pearl District is fun... Farmer's Market there is great

lots of biking (I always travel with a bike) and walking trails and if you like to hike in Parks... this is where I spent all of my spare time:
Friedrich Wilderness Park / north of town

Used lots of airline miles and hotel points for a great deal in downtown historic district at Alamo/Riverwalk. Whatever. It's booked, and it's something different. Never been to Texas. Looking forward to the art museums and barbecue!
