Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder said Friday hes concerned about the talks to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, warning that if there is a breakdown in free trade it could ultimately harm Republicans new tax reform law.
If NAFTA were to fall apart, it would have huge negative consequences, Snyder, a Republican, said during a panel at the POLITICO State Solutions Conference in Washington.
Snyder warned that any sudden moves that would restrict free trade could cause chaos for businesses that are otherwise poised to benefit from President Donald Trumps biggest 2017 legislative victory, tax reform.
The administration is excited about their tax reform. If they want to see the benefits they want to get from that, having NAFTA fall apart would be a disaster for that, Snyder said. If NAFTA were to implode, businesses may face so much uncertainty that theyd be hesitant to grow at the rate Republicans are hoping in the coming years.
