and stayed outside - what kind of weapon did he have? Was he outgunned by the shooter?

(30,813 posts)Once others arrived, they were so 'cautious' they went into the school in a tank. I don't see how people could expect this single officer to go solo.

(14,275 posts)I do not fault that officer in any way. He was an ordinary human being in an extraordinary situation. Arm chair quarterbacks like to talk tough about how someone should have handled a crisis after the fact. It is reasonable to realize he had to have been in shock when he was in that situation. Very few people react as expected when they are in shock.

(18,127 posts)That said, I don't fault him either.

(16,186 posts)Choices made by higher ups for example, suspending him is a great smokescreen / scapegoat.

(34,174 posts)Sheriff Scott Israel said Deputy Scot Peterson should have went in. Addressed the killer. Killed the killer. Video footage showed Peterson did none of that, Israel said.

Police protocol is to engage active shooters.

(16,887 posts)...officer who when faced with military grade weapons that can pierce body armor against them with their pistol, stands behind cover.
I suggest everyone look at video of shootouts between law enforcement at any confrontation with AR-15's and tell me you don't see them all doing this....
I remember in the Las Vegas shooting the police armed only with pistols and even those with some rifles, didn't know where the shots were coming from and were taking cover.

(25,253 posts)this security guard? Talk about how futile it is to match up a service weapon against the a AR-15.
This guard was clearly outgunned.

(16,887 posts)...if this school resource officer was an active duty law enforcement officer or what his exact background and status was.
I don't know the role of the Police Union, but at some point I certainly hope that they and other law enforcement speak out...

(11,872 posts)does not mean you can act in a crisis like a hero. Some cops freeze, soldiers freeze....this further exposes the utter ridiculousness of arming teachers.

(32,076 posts)I feel sorry for the guy. He's going to catch a lot of hell for not playing human shield. For a whole huge school. with 3000 students. For hourly crap pay. Against a (typically) suicidal offender. With military grade arms.

(3,473 posts)and multiple officers waited outside during the shooting. Is there documentation of police protocol somewhere? And some of those officers may have had rifles in their cars.

(25,253 posts)This is what it said that happened:
The attackers shot a Garland Independent School District (GISD) security officer in the ankle.[4] Shortly after the attackers pulled up and opened fire, both were promptly shot and killed by a snipers.[5] The FBI had been monitoring the two attackers for years and an undercover agent was right behind them, filming with his camera.
The two gunmen got out of their vehicle and fired dozens of rounds at the police car, shooting the Garland ISD security guard. The men were then shot and wounded by Stevens, and eventually killed by four members of the SWAT team.[citation needed] The initial news reports mistakenly claimed that Officer Gregory Stevens killed the two gunmen.

(972 posts)SWAT finished them off while they were lying on the ground because of fears of a suicide attack.

(89 posts)Initial reports were erroneous. The cop you mentioned returned fire, but didnt kill either gunman.

(972 posts)they had a bomb in the vehicle.
Here
"The gunmen Stevens faced, considered terrorists by the FBI, were armed with assault rifles and body armor. Stevens stopped them with a handgun. Although he was later aided by a SWAT team on hand for the controversial event sponsored by the American Freedom Defense Initiative, the Garland Police Department says Stevens is responsible for taking down both men."

There is a detailed report of the shot for shot of this event that was on a police website. I will see if I can find it.

(16,104 posts)We have a record of incidents that should have resulted in banning access to guns and begun a process of professional mental fitness evaluations.
We have a record of family members and "friends" having reason to intercede in gun access.
We have documented records of alerting ALL the proper authorities to the menace.
We have "a good guy with a gun" in place at the school.
The failure here is so epic it proves there is nothing that will keep us safe rather than eleiminating the one true constant in all these events - THE GUN.

(13,559 posts)Which all of these things are. You can NOT counter a surprise attack.
Gun on your hip. Doesn't matter!
This is not the movies or TV. This is like the "Fog of war." Armed guards in the building would have been in the same position. Who to shoot? What the F is going on? Minutes pass. Do they shelter too and wait for back-up or go after the noise?
The answer is NO FUKING GUNS!
